ON THE ROAD WITH MT. JOY

“Touring is incredible, but it’s its own mindset.”

That’s what Mt. Joy guitarist and lead vocalist Matt Quinn recently said in the midst of the band’s worldwide tour supporting their third full-length album, Orange Blood.

And it’s true. Playing on different stages every night for weeks, months on end takes resilience, a genuine love of creating music and a commitment to put on the best show for your adoring fans. Mt. Joy — the brainchild of Quinn and Philadelphia friend Sam Cooper — have built that audience through acoustic-tinged tracks like “Astro Van” and “Silver Lining,” which makes their thoughts on the acoustic guitar carry heavy weight.

A LIGHTWEIGHT SOLUTION

Which is why the new Fender Highway Series of acoustic models perfectly fits their needs. Merging an ergonomic body shape, a groundbreaking amp-friendly pickup system and revolutionary bracing structure, the Highway Series offers the tactile charm and unplugged resonance of acoustics twice their size.

Those factors, plus strong but thin and super comfortable “C”-shaped necks, make these models the ideal partner for any artists taking the stage at shows from the smallest coffee shows to the grandest of festivals.

“I play mostly acoustic guitar, and I think an acoustic guitar through an amp is better than a [direct input],” Quinn said. “It’s more colorful and has a more interesting tone. To have a guitar that’s more made to be plugged into an amp with an acoustic sound is what I’ve been looking for as a player.

ELECTRIC FEEL, ACOUSTIC TONE

Quinn recently played a Highway Series model at a concert in New York’s Central Park and came away with glowing reviews, noting that it didn’t sacrifice any tone from the thinner body style while still holding up to the rigors of a full set.

“Because of the neck, it feels a little more like playing an electric guitar,” he said. “The string tension, I would say, is like an acoustic guitar, so if you’re used to that, that’ll feel familiar. And I actually was expecting it to be a full-bodied acoustic guitar, but it’s more ergonomic and lighter.

“We play for like two-and-a-half hours every night. It can be heavy, but this is super-light.”

As Quinn realized, the Highway Series represents not a revision, but a re-imagining of the acoustic experience, inviting players to throw away the map and get lost on the open road of creativity.
