“I took a lot of piano lessons, and violin and clarinet, and I always just kept coming back to the guitar.”

Los Angeles-based musician Dana Williams has always loved the guitar. Raised in a profoundly musical household, she began experimenting with different instruments from an early age. “Growing up, I played all kinds of instruments but only one of them fit,” she says. “I took a lot of piano lessons, and violin and clarinet, and I always just kept coming back to the guitar.”

Williams’ father – a professional guitar player and lover of Strats – taught her the basics, but she was determined to pursue her own relationship with the instrument, favoring her classical nylon string guitar over an electric. “I was just rebelling in a nerdy way, I guess,” she says. Now Williams has come full circle, and finds herself drawn to the same iconic model as her dad. “I feel like this is the next step in my life, to play Strats,” she says. “I always say that finding a guitar is like finding a wand in Harry Potter, because it chooses you!”

When it comes to her creative process, Williams treats the guitar as the foundation of each song – and then builds from there. “I’ll just sit down and come up with a chord progression, and if I hear a melody over it, then I think, ‘OK, I’ll stick with these chords and work on the melody,’” she says. “Then I sort of map out each section melodically and the lyrics come alongside that.”

Inspired by her love of poetry, Williams weaves personal anecdotes with abstract reflections to create songs that are both relatable and honest. Sincerity is paramount when it comes to writing and performing music.

I’m inspired by: love, sadness, our emotional capacities as humans to feel all kinds of things, and then I write about it. All time favorite guitar solo: Sister Rosetta Tharpe’s solo “Up Above My Head.” I love how rhythmic and uninhibited it is. It captures her essence. Where is your happy place: Ha! My happy place is in my bed. That’s where I find the most comfort and inspiration. I write a lot there. First Fender guitar: A yellow Telecaster. Why be a musician: Music has always been a part of me. I don’t feel like I had a choice. What’s in your home fridge: Always pickles, spinach and chocolate almond milk. Describe a perfect day: I like to wake up and drink coffee in the sun w/ my dog, then play guitar for a while and stay in my pajamas. If I wasn’t a musician I would: Have an animal rescue farm, rehabilitate animals and sing to them. 10 years out, where are you: I’ll probably be writing some new tunes, I’d like to live in different parts of the world, maybe Italy.
