HOME-GROWN INSPIRATION

Gabi Wilson was raised around music in Vallejo, Calif. Her father, Kenny Wilson, longtime frontman for the cover band Urban Bushmen, made it his mission to ensure his daughter grew up with a healthy respect for the artists that influenced him.

Marvin Gaye, Michael Jackson, Jimi Hendrix, Prince. These lessons were rich with pioneers that never shirked away from pushing boundaries. “I remember waking up and hearing Lenny Kravitz and Prince on the TV when we were cooking breakfast, and that, to me, was a really pivotal moment in my life,” she said.

MORE THAN SINGLES

Perhaps the most important thing that Gabi learned during her childhood education was that these songs spilling out of the speakers were built on more than a simplified genre or riff. Known professionally as H.E.R. (Having Everything Revealed) and a five-time Grammy winner and Oscar winner, Gabi remains reflective on the impact those early musical influences had on her.

“I think the one thing that everybody had in common was the feeling,” she said. “It wasn’t necessarily what genre I fit in, but how I could incorporate what I’ve learned from all these different guitar players. I believe there’s only two genres of music — good and bad.”

Today, H.E.R. is known as one of the most electrifying artists to take the stage, having wowed audiences around the globe with numerous festival appearances, award shows and even a headlining spot on Saturday Night Live.

FOR THE NEXT GENERATION

While H.E.R. is an accomplished drummer, pianist and bassist, she still sticks close to the guitar, as her fiery attack, penchant for virtuosic solos and mastery of melody set her apart from the rest. In celebration of her vision and impact on the popular music of today, Fender is introducing the limited-edition H.E.R. Stratocaster.

Featuring a brilliant Blue Marlin finish inspired by fishing trips with her dad, a pair of Vintage Noiseless Stratocaster pickups to access the sound of her icons and a comfortable mid-’60s “C”-shaped neck, this signature model is definitely as unique as she is. As H.E.R.’s second namesake Fender model, it also marks a milestone for the next generation of female artists.

“I’m seeing a lot of women playing guitar and killing it,” she said. “I absolutely love to see that. I think we need more women who are producing, more women on the drums, more women on the bass, the guitar. I think we’re not shedding light on those women and I hope that I continue to inspire.”
