Many artists are described as “prolific,” but MonoNeon (née Dwayne Thomas, Jr.) goes above and beyond the traditional sense of the word.

Since 2010, he has released 25 solo albums, in addition to maintaining wildly popular Instagram and YouTube channels and collaborating with the likes of Prince, Mac Miller, Nas and Ne-Yo.

From avant-garde to southern soul, funk and all notes in-between, MonoNeon’s astounding musical range, tone and taste are always on full display.

MUSICAL ROOTS

His interest in music began as a child growing up in Memphis. His father was and still is a sought-after bassist. His mother and grandmother always had music in the house or at church.

When it came to the bass, MonoNeon had a great tutor, as he and Dwayne Thomas, Sr., regularly jammed together. “We pretty much started out like each other. We had no formal training, just practicing, listening, emulating,” said dad. “Then later on, thinking I knew what I was doing, I started adding effects, things bassists weren’t doing at the time. You tell me to go right, I go left. That’s why I embrace what he does. It’s his style.”

That flair — bolstered by training at Berklee College of Music — also extends to the bright colors and intricate quilted fabrics that make up his eye-catching outfits. Inspired by experimental art movements such as Dadaism and surrealism, MonoNeon’s works are as impactful visually as they are musically.

“I try to connect music to visual arts,” he said. “Abstract expressionism stuff that I really try to convey when I play. I don’t know how to explain it. I just grab those things and apply them to music.”

ART AS A BASS

To celebrate MonoNeon’s career and singular style, Fender is releasing the MonoNeon Signature Jazz Bass V, a statement-making instrument equal parts swagger and serious business.

Finished in a bright neon-yellow complemented by a neon orange painted headstock and pickguard (plus a set of matching Stance socks), it is undeniably associated with MonoNeon. Custom-wound MonoNeon Jazz Bass pickups deliver fat-punchy tone, while an 18-volt active preamp with 3-band EQ offers flexible tone shaping.

All of these features come together in an ultimately expressive instrument ideal for creating a style all on your own.

“I’m really just doing me,” he said. “I don’t try to sway people to think this way about me or that way. However you want to feel is up to you.”
