And for over 75 years, this commitment to ingenuity has resulted in a lot of variations to our instruments, from ashtray bridge covers to jumbo headstocks to wild pickup configurations to wilder finishes.","nodeType":"text"}],"nodeType":"paragraph"},{"data":{},"content":[{"data":{},"marks":[],"value":"One of the more interesting notions that we had when we first started out was the onboard muting system, a feature that we introduced with the first iterations of the Precision Bass in 1951. The logic behind including a mute made perfect sense at the time. Mutes had been incorporated on string instruments for centuries and the P Bass was meant to serve as an alternative to the acoustic upright basses that populated the rhythm sections of so many bands of the era. In the ’50s, upright bassists would frequently palm mute their parts to provide a stark contrast to the music that was happening around them. So including a mute on our innovative new electric bass seemed like a great way to bridge the divide between the classic upright and our latest invention, especially since the P Bass was designed to be amplified and could be played at louder volumes with greater sustain. The ’60s saw the introduction of the Bass VI – a 6-string bass that opened up a world of sonic possibilities, as well as the Jaguar, our highest-end guitar, loaded with intricate electronics, a variety of controls and flashy chrome hardware. The ’60s VI and the Jaguar also both had mutes included. Why? Well, as was the case with the P Bass, it seemed reasonable enough to assume any Bass VI player would likely be interested in some kind of option to moderate their instrument’s sustain with ease. As far as the Jaguar, one can only conclude that given all of the bells and whistles available on the Jag, an onboard mute would be a value-add. Plus, our earliest mutes were constructed out of foam that degraded over time, whether it be from temperature, humidity or human sweat coming into contact with the material. This made the mutes unreliable and difficult to deal with.
