One of the most noteworthy appointments was its shorter scale, which was meant to facilitate comfort and playability. The instrument was also loaded with chrome hardware and designed with an increased number of controls and more intricate electronics. It also had a single slide switch with its own volume and tone wheels that allowed for a more bass-heavy neck pickup sound. Additionally, it came with high-output pickups surrounded by metal housings called “claws,” which reduced hum and concentrated the magnetic field under the strings. This distinctive guitar quickly became the go-to for many surf rockers but failed to catch fire with most other players and eventually got mothballed as surf music waned. The version introduced in ’63 had iconic aesthetics, including a black Tolex cover and control panel, silver-sparkle grille cloth, raised logo and redesigned dual-circuitry (normal and vibrato) with switches for both channels. Like the Duo-Sonic, it had a shorter scale, dual-pickup configuration and an appealing entry-level price. But its offset shape set it apart from both the Musicmaster and the Duo-Sonic, as well as its vibrato system with a floating bridge and “Fender Dynamic Vibrato” tailpiece. Its two single-coil pickups had their own three-position slider switches for four different tone settings: bridge pickup only, neck pickup only, both pickups on, both pickups on and wired out of phase. This guitar’s pickup wiring was also easy to mod in order to achieve an even wider range of sounds.
