Legendary Tom Petty Passes Away at 66, Artists React

Tom Petty, the pioneering and prolific frontman of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, passed away Monday night at the age of 66.

The news was confirmed in a statement by longtime manager Tony Dimtiriades.

"On behalf of the Tom Petty family, we are devastated to announce the untimely death of our father, husband, brother, leader and friend Tom Petty," Dimitriades wrote. "He suffered cardiac arrest at his home in Malibu in the early hours of this morning and was taken to UCLA Medical Center but could not be revived. He died peacefully at 8:40 p.m. PT surrounded by family, his bandmates and friends."

Petty, who won three Grammy Awards during his career and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002, died just one week after he played the last of three sold-out shows at the Hollywood Bowl to end the Heartbreakers’ 40th anniversary tour.
