The best bass I have ever owned

(5.0)
Bear.GDP on January 7, 2014 (updated January 7, 2014)
Professional Blues R&B Gospel Jazz Classic Rock Country Bluegrass

I've been playing bass professionally since the early 1960s and have owned many Fender, Gibson and Gretsch basses in my time. Mt favorite was my '58 P-Bass. A P-Bass always gave me the tone I was looking for regardless of what amp I was using.

Due to ill health I was forced to give up performing in 1992 and since a lot of my gear was worth a lot of money as vintage pieces I sold everything I had to help with my medical costs. The only bass I kept was my '58 P-Bass.

Christmas 2013 my wife bought me the Squire Vintage Modified P-Bass in the butterscotch blond with the maple neck and fretboard. I did not expect a lot out of this bass due to its very low price and the fact that is was made in Indonesia. Honestly what I expected was a piece of driftwood with strings that would be nothing more than a piece of wall art. HOW WRONG I WAS!

This bass is phenomenal. It sounds better and plays better than my trusty '58 that I have owned since 1962. The Duncan Designed pickup is incredible. The tone is so clear with spectacular punch and the quality of the build and finish of the instrument is as good as I have ever seen. Other than adjusting the truss rod a bit and setting the action to my liking, this bass played great right out of the box and the intonation was spot on. Kudos to the Indonesian workers who built my bass, thank you!

A friend who has been after my '58 for decades now owns it and I have a pocket fuil of cash and an excellent bass to boot. I just love my new Squier Vintage Modified P-Bass. If you're looking for incredible bang for the buck, your search stops here.

Fantastic Body

(4.0)

The body, and build of this bass is spectacular, however, the neck leaves much to be desired in terms of playability. I picked one of these up, as a back up road item, and was thoroughly impressed with the construction and quality of the body. I have since swapped out the neck with real Fender neck, and it is an amazing instrument. Personally I prefer playing with a standard C sized Fender rosewood neck, which was what I swapped out the original neck with from one of my older P-Basses and I find myself playing this more than most of my other basses. Since I was not impressed with the neck, I think it would work better as a field hockey stick, I was unable to give this a 5 star rating, but needless to say, I really am impressed with the quality of the bass body.

This is a great Bass

I bought both of these basses. The white with the black pickguard and the natural finish with the black pickguard. I could not believe the quality of these instruments. The natural finish bass was considerably more weight than the white one.I would not want to have the natural finish bass strapped on for a whole gig. The white one was a lot lighter, more like the '66 P Bass I used to own way back when. The necks on these basses are fantastic. I prefer the maple neck now, having never owned one before, I have come to love it. I would suggest that you buy two, put the maple neck on the white bass, then do whatever you want with the other. The pickguards were of good quality, but I preferred putting a Tortoise shell pickguard on the white one, then added a chrome bridge cover and a thumbrest like the ones in the 1960s. I took the neck off of the natural finish one and put it on the Squier Affinity Series bass that I bought for 179 bucks and put a good quality white pickguard on that one. These basses are now equal to Fender Basses costing up to 4 times as much. I love this Bass.
