Squier gives you the best of both bass worlds—Precision and Jazz—with the Vintage Modified Precision Bass PJ. Its sleek Precision Bass form features the sonically powerful and tonally versatile combination of a punchy Fender-designed split single-coil Precision Bass middle pickup and a growling single-coil Jazz Bass bridge pickup with ceramic magnets.

Other features include a maple neck with “modern C” profile, 9.5”-radius rosewood fingerboard with 20 medium jumbo frets, three-ply black pickguard, three “dome”-style control knobs (bridge pickup volume, middle pickup volume, master tone), vintage-style bridge with four single-groove saddles, and vintage-style tuners. Available in Candy Apple Red, Lake Placid Blue and Three-color Sunburst.

More than excellent value for money

Straight out of the box the setup on mine was excellent, no buzzing on the fretboard and a very nice low action. The neck feels great, has no dead spots and the instrument as a whole sings when you play it without amplification. Also it is incredibly light without being out of balance. To me these are all very important aspects for a bass that's marketed towards ambitious beginners and amateur players because these are things you can't just 'fix' without having a more in-depth knowledge of the instrument and can and will ruin your whole playing experience.
The pickups sound surprisingly good, they don't squeal in high volume situations or when you hit the dirt box, the P pup even has cloth wire leads which is a nice touch. I was planning on replacing them but I really don't see a need to. All the parts are nicely shielded with groundwires attached to the control cavity which is finished in shielding paint, all in all the attention to detail on the electronics is better than on some of my more expensive Fenders. The pots however aren't of the best quality, the volume is either on or gone and because the control cavity is so incredibly compact it's hard to fit standard CTS pots in it.
Besides that it only has a few minor flaws, mine came with a little chip in the lower black layer of the pickguard, the nut looks incredibly cheap and the hole for the tone knob is drilled for an input jack so there is some wiggle room around the shaft of the tone pot.

This new bass is fantastic. It sounds fantastic, it plays fantastic, the neck is fantastic, the pickups sound fantastic ...any way I set them, the strings are fantastic, the finish is fantastic, and Squier has made a beautiful bass for such a fantastic low price... high mass bridge and all!!! Wow... I love it.

Out of the box, this bass was a bit of a dog in terms of playability, but with a correct set up, the bass plays brilliantly and has a fast, comfortable neck which is a joy to navigate. The PJ is super-light, so no need to fear neck or back pain from lengthy sessions with it around your neck. Tonally speaking, ceramic pickups are seldom a good idea, and the neck P pickup is no exception - there's no warmth or depth to this pickup and it's difficult to get a 'nice' sound, although 'workable' sounds are certainly there. The Jazz pickup, on the other hand, is surprisingly pleasant and offers a frankly impressive range of tones, all relatively authentic to the Fender Jazz sound. If you play slap, you'll be happy. On the whole, had Squier put a decent pickup in the neck position, they would have had a cracking bass - a Seymour Duncan collaboration would have been nice here, or even just a better Fender pickup would have done the job. I like this bass, and I wanted this pickup configuration, but ultimately the neck pup comes up short on expectation. You can see Squier closing the gap on Fender, but a little more attention to tone would not go amiss,

I have owned American P-basses, both fretted and fretless. I'll tell you what, until I am a multi-millionaire, I will ALWAYS buy Squier axes. If they are set up by an experienced luthier, there is no reason to pay the additional grand you are likely to have to pony up to get into a great sounding bass. My modified P-bass (it is stock, with the J-bass bridge pick-up) stacks up against all straight Fender products at my local Guitar Center and Sam Ash.
