More about Vintage Modified Jazzmaster® Special

With its offset waist and contoured body the new Vintage Modified Jazzmaster® Special gives a nod to its iconic forbearer but has other things going for it that make it truly 'modified'. The unique top-loading hard tail bridge features string saddles which are adjustable for intonation and designed to have a 9.5” radius when sitting flat on the bridge plate. The bridge is anchored at the rear of the plate while the front sits atop height adjustment screws, which can be raised or lowered to achieve desired string height/action while subtle adjustment at the rear (anchor) achieves the correct bridge angle. A custom set of Duncan Designed™ pickups offers tones from glassy smooth to jangly rockin’ rhythm crunch with a vintage toned neck pickup and higher output bridge pickup. Other features include '62 Jazz Bass® concentric volume/tone controls, vintage style tuners and a comfortable one-piece maple neck.

Just the retro workhorse I was looking for!

I'll be honest. I bought my Jazzmaster to fill out my small collection of vintage-look guitars at a reasonable price. Then I took it to a gig and fell in love with the way it played and sounded. My tone is simple. I play through a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe with zero added effects. Just the channel switch and boost that came with it — 1. loud; 2. louder; 3. loudest. That's all I really need. Well, the Jazzmaster paired very nicely with the amp. Sustain. Bite. Guts. And plenty of control. It's my primary gig guitar these days.

At a recent show a guy in the crowd demanded to know what year my Jazzmaster was made. He was astonished when I said, "2011." He thought it was decades old. I've gotten a lot of compliments on my tone and the look of the guitar. I'm not self-centered or anything, but I must say I like the attention.

VM Jazzmaster Special is truly special!

When my local Sam Ash salesman showed me the Squire VM Jazzmaster Special I thought that it looked like a really nice guitar design. More specifically, I really liked the simplicity of the controls. The two stacked tone/volume knobs are borrowed from Fender's bass guitars replace what would be four control knobs (2 volume/2 bass) like you find in on a Gibson Les Paul. I always thought that the Les Paul setup was "messy" to deal with while playing. But, Fender's stacked controls are so easy to manage when making adjustments between songs. In fact, they would be an awesome upgrade to their other guitars they should consider. The Duncan designed Jazzmaster pickups also sounded pretty good, especially for a guitar with a retail street price of $299. With the only other control on the guitar being the 3 position pickup switch, this guitar is so easy to play that it is a joy. I really like the Jazzmaster/Jaguar body style and own two USA models. And, the clean looks of this guitar with the body style I love was wonderful. You may ask why did I not buy it yet? Good question ... It was unfortunately already sold! But, I am having them order one for me which I hope to have soon. My only complaint is the limited color selection. The sunburst is OK, but the butterscotch is just plain ugly. Put some cool colors on this guitar and it would sell like hotcakes! I will also sand down the polyester finish on the back of the neck to improve the flow of how it plays. But, that is a personal thing for me. One final note is that I own a lot of expensive Fender USA guitars (12) and this is my first Squire. If Fender keeps making high value, low price toys like this I may not need to buy the big dollar ones anymore! Just kidding, I will eventually buy the new Fender Select Carved Top Jazzmaster HH but this toy will be great fun until I do. In summary, this guitar is a great buy.
