Super-Sonic™ 60 Head

Model : 2160100
$1,699.99MSRP
Super-Sonic™ amplifiers are the favorite tool of pro guitarists in many different musical genres who love to create glorious Fender® clean tones and expressive modern high-gain tones with one no-nonsense tube amp. The vintage channel is based on two legendary Fender favorites, and the awesome burn channel ignites musical inspiration with overdrive flavors ranging from bluesy to flame-throwing. The Super-Sonic 60 delivers increased bass response and fatter tone, and its heavily saturated tube overdrive and sustain can be fine-tuned without masking the tonal character of your guitar. And by popular demand, the new Super-Sonic 60 models are available in two classic cosmetic treatments - Black/Silver and 1961-style Blonde/Oxblood, both with ivory “radio” knobs and flowing 1960s script logo.

Just missed a Tube Spring Reverb

This is the most flexible amp I've ever played. A multi-amps guitar rig is a very expensive setup. For example, a Fender Vibrolux, a Fender Bassman and a Marshall JCM 800, more the equipment of Palmer or Radial multi-selector and sharing pedalboard between amps can reach thousands of dollars. The Fender Super Sonic 60 Head gave me this setup from an economical, light and lean way, providing two vintage voices with Passive EQ, the blackface tone of Vibrolux, the tweed tone of Bassman and a third modern voice that you can sculpt through an Active EQ and two stackable stages of gain where I use with help of pedals to get a Marshall JCM 800 tone and all these voices are under the control of my feet on my pedalboard.

One of the biggest advantages of version Head to define your tone is the opportunity to use different speaker cabinets that the Jensen P10R 10" AlNiCo speakers that comes with the vintage combo amps. You choose the speakers you want and I prefer cabinets with 2 speakers of 12" ceramic Celestion Vintage 30 @ 4 Ohms. I strongly suggest the Vibro King VK212B Extension Enclosure Speaker Cabinet. The width of cabinet is exactly the same width of amplifier, like a Marshall half stack.

Other feature only found in modern and expensive amplifiers from great brands are FX Loops with level control of sending and returning of signal chain. This can be used to avoid clipping of overdrived signal, to compensate for signal loss on long pedalboards or to serve as a clean booster if bypassed with a short cable.

However not all are flowers:

Considering it is a medium-wattage amp, with only 2 x 6L6GC tubes and 60 watts, this amp gets hot enough to fry eggs. Excessive heat is worrisome because the tracks of PCB - Integrated Circuit Board can crack easily in a short time of use, causing leakage of electrolytic capacitors and the burn of tubes and transformers, parts more expensive from amp.

In the Vintage channel, when you change the voice Vibrolux to the voice Bassman, the volume increases significantly and that's a rookie mistake disconcerting when we play live. I have to flatten the volume pedal every time I change the channel or voice.

There is no plausible reason to justify the withdrawal of Tube Spring Reverb of Head version than not the reduction of cost of production when the Combo version already possessed it by default. However, the retail price has not been substantially reduced. This was a design choice of product engineering regrettable. Tube Spring Reverb is one of the most striking and appreciable features of the brand Fender. Besides do lack, depreciate the value added of the product to the end consumer.
