Greta™

Model : 2303000000
$259.99MSRP

In the playfully diminutive form of a vintage tabletop radio, the Pawn Shop Special Greta model is quite possibly the most unusual Fender tube amp ever. In fact, nobody would blame you if you saw a Greta and, not yet realizing its true identity, tried to tune in the local weather on it …

But an amp is exactly what it is-a two-watt tabletop beauty with a 4” Special Design speaker, old-school VU meter with “clean to overload” indicator display and simple volume and tone controls. Its charmingly vintage-style enclosure has front and rear wood panels finished in bright red, gold-finished metal top and sides for increased shielding, “Greta” script badge on the front panel and tabletop feet. Under the hood and on the back panel, the Greta features a single 12AT7 output tube and 12AX7 preamp tube, with a 1/4” instrument jack and 1/4” line out jack (for preamp use with another amplifier). Greta produces a variety of low-volume clean and overdriven guitar tones, but even if you never plug a guitar into it, the 1/8” back-panel auxiliary input is perfect for iPod or other media player use, with great mono tube playback sound that’ll have you rocking right there at your desk.

A Greta for my '63 SG...

(5.0)
gattart on May 8, 2013 (updated May 8, 2013)
Amateur Alternative

OK, after seeing the video I had some pretty high hopes for this amp. I went nuts looking for one in a local shop and bought it after a quick try out with an EVH guitar, sounded alright even though it wasn't my kind of guitar. Then at home I only had a JEM7, that was just THE wrong kind of guitar for this little amp. When I finally managed to plug in my SG, that was it! Sweet saturation that smooths out with the T-top pickups in my SG, that was just too harsh with both the Breeds in the JEM and the TB-4 in my Jackson DK2S, and the tone just kinda bleeds out when you roll off the volume of those high output pups. However, even though the ceramic pickups in my Les Paul are generally a bit overpowering, they really make the Greta sing, and rolling off the volume cleans up the sound beautifully without losing the lush tone. Still, to my ear, the Greta sounds best with Burstbuckers or T-tops.
I often use it to warm up my iPhone's Amplitube, though I have a living room version of my regular setup going into the Greta too. I've been getting the best sounds out of it by keeping the volume maxed out and the tone oscillating between 6 and 8. In order to clean it up I bought my first EQ pedal, an MXR 6 band, to put just before the amp. I keep the EQ on at about -6 to -9db and then let loose if I want to make some noise! My guitar goes into an SD Twin Tube and then either straight into the EQ or into an Adrenalinn III (as my ultralight Hiwatt emulator) and then the EQ. I can get my full-on concert tone in my living room WITHOUT getting yelled at by my wife! Oh yeah!!!
This is my first Fender product, though I hear they make some pretty good guitars too, and I have to admit the Greta's video advert is one accurate bit of publicity. This is one brilliant and relaxing little amp. Only little thing I'd change is maybe making the rectifier a valve thing too, but, then again that's one less thing that can go 'pop'! I still use an old Gallien Krueger for concerts, mostly because it has a stereo power section, but I've been considering getting another Greta and joining them together with a bullock yoke, or something like that...
Oh, and thanks guys for making it red!!!

Furniture That Rocks

Looks like a vintage piece of furniture and sounds like a junk yard dog. I love the old school VU meter and tend to max it out with excitement. I combined the Greta table top with a matching Fender Greta Super Champ 112 Cabinet. Couldn't be happier with it.

A Little Mojo Machine!

(5.0)
MadJackF on April 25, 2013
Beginner Blues Rock Classic Rock

This is one cool little Mojo Machine. I was skeptical about it only having a 4" speaker and only volume and tone controls, not see the other features. The little 4" speaker is what it is, good for low volume practice or Lo-Fi tones. This thing comes alive when you plug in a good external speaker. I'm using a Weber cab with a Weber Signature AlNiCo 10S speaker and it is just awsome. The semi-cleans are bright and chimey, but not ice-picky, with just a touch of grit to it. With just a slight turn on the volume knob and it starts to get a nice bluesy grind as it starts to warm up the tone. Turn it up some more now you're into some serious crunchy rock tones. If the two watts aren't enough for your gig or you want a direct feed for recording, just plug into line out jack. I run the line out into the instrument input of a 50 watt 2 X 12" solid state amp and it sounds like a 60's Twin. Big Rick, full, warm tones. This thing is solidly built and has been banged around a bit more than I would like, but it keeps on rockin' with no complaints. Aside from the 4" speaker, the only other fault I've found is there need to be an easy way to carry this thing, either a leather strap handle (like you had on the Champion 600) or a carry bag. Other than that I love this little amp and recommend it to anyone who will listen.

Awesome tones.

I love my Greta! ...but I must state that I use it as head, going thru a 2x12 cab with Jensen Mods. The small speaker is OK I guess for lo-fi applications, but I was looking for a low watt tube amp that could get good tones at a low volume thru my cab. The Greta delivers, period. It is a very touch/picking sensitive amp that can crank out some great tube overdrive. Work with the volume on your guitar and the volume on the Greta and you can make some magic. Takes pedals well and has a decent amount of headroom (for me). It does everything from lo-fi Blues tones of the '50s to tube saturated '70s Riff Rock.

Blast from the Past

The Greta is just brilliant - it looks just gorgeous and the sounds are just incredible for the price. I bought it without trying it and was knocked out when I got back home and plugged it in - I couldn't believe what I was hearing. This was definitely one of my best purchases ever!

I purchased this amp after being quite skeptical of others' reviews. This is a great table top amplifier for casual practice, or as I do, plug into a 10" Kustom cab. This kicks out the sound for being so small. And the design really brightens the room, and is a great conversation piece.
