I got this for my birthday last year as my second bass guitar (my first REAL bass guitar - I have a cheap $250 Dean Edge 09 bass in mahogany) and what an incredible choice I made! In fact, I was browsing through my local music store for some bass tab books and saw a used Olympic white Fender Jazz bass for about $200, which is what I set my mind on to buy the following next week for my upcoming birthday. The week I went to get it, I found out that someone bought it, so I went looking for another cheap Fender Jazz bass. I saw a black Standard Jazz bass that was pretty cheap, but I saw a brand-new, just shipped 3-color sunburst Modern Player Jazz bass sitting right in front of it, about $150 cheaper than the Standard Jazz bass I saw. I took it down and plugged it in to the nearest amp and cranked out some Who tunes and some Zeppelin tunes and was blown away by the deeper, more ballsy sound than a regular Jazz bass. I haven't bought another bass since; I'm so blown away by this one I don't think I need another one (though I'll probably get another Fender bass sooner or later).

Well let me start by saying this bass is worth every single penny. I looked at a few MIM Jazz basses & I almost got the standard ash, until I noticed that the neck had a slight twist in it. I also looked at a few other MIM standard jazz basses and I was not impressed by the overall craftsmanship. Rough frets sticking out of the neck and just an overall rough jagged feel to the MIM. So at this point I was kind of discouraged. I love fender - it's all I have ever wanted to play and all I have ever pretty much played. The only other basses that I saw by fender were the made in America which are very very nice! However it just wasn't in my budget. Then when I was about to give up, I saw a white fender modern play kind of tucked away at the back of the bass room (I was in guitar center) I took it down and started to play it. wow, this thing feels so nice, and looks just as nice. It put the MIM to shame and was 100 dollars less. (I don't mean to talk bad about MIM products, but I'm sorry they are just greatly lacking in quality). So I decided pretty much on the spot that this would make a great solid backup bass. So I bought it along with a really nice SKB hardshell case. Last night I had band practice, I started out by playing this before my main player which is a Fender American standard jazz bass. So I played my modern player for half of the practice, and then I switched to my American standard. What I am about to say is the honest truth. I like the modern player bass more than my American standard. There I said it, and is true. The oversea's fender products have really proven to be some amazing quality instruments for the price. I still think nothing beats an American standard fender. I have to say though, this thing comes in a very close second, if not tied. So get this bass while you have the chance. you won't regret it. it's very versatile and over all a great bass.

Made in China, EXTREMELY impressed with the quality and tone of this bass guitar! Many people think that this bass is only for the one style of music, but with as little as just changing the strings you can definitely play ANYTHING from punk rock to blues on this particular bass. I recommend this instrument for someone in a band for the stage or for the studio. You can get an amazing tone from this bass by plugging it into an ampeg amp, and tweaking some knobs, as I found this the best way to get the true tone out this instrument. However, having said positive comments, I was disappointed to see a bit of a sloppy paint job around the corner of where the back pickup sits. Its not really noticeable, but it was disappointed - but when can you expect from a Chinese factory? To sum it all up, this bass was definitely a winner, as is definitely worth the price!

Having played guitar and bass for 33 years, and specialized in the low end for more then 15 years, I thought I knew what I wanted, and it was a Fender Roscoe Beck four string. I wanted the neck, shape and balance of my Jazz, but without the single coil hums. My Jazz was also heavy (a Japanese 75 reissue in natural Ash that weighed a ton) and I wanted the light solidity of my Sting Precision, which had had its single pickup upgraded and the electrics fully shielded.
But then I found the Modern Player Jazz. Two humbuckers, each completely noise free, even in the messy studios and venues I work in. Thicker, rounder tone than a straight Jazz. More flexible and breathy than a Precision. Nice growl when you need it. Good balance and low weight. Familiar logical controls. Great tonewoods and a flawless high gloss finish. After three months of playing I've only encountered one minor niggle: the spring in the bridge saddle for the E string is too short and rattles. When I get round to changing the strings (to flatwounds: that's how I roll) I'll fit a longer spring.
Chinese made of course, which some players get sniffy about. Made in the same factories as the Squier Classic Vibes, which are extraordinary VFM. One salesperson I spoke to said he loved the Squier CVs but thought the Fender MPs were a step too far... For years I've played Japanese and Korean instruments, but the Chinese are now making instruments pretty much as good, at far lower prices.
And all for under £400 new with a full guarantee, bought from my friendly neighborhood guitar store, when the nearest Roscoe Beck (unsold old stock as it's no longer manufactured) is in Amsterdam for more than £1500.
