For today's "active" bassist, Fender® offers the stylish and thunderous Deluxe Series Active Precision Bass® Special guitar. This huge-sounding hybrid model features an alder body with a single-ply beveled gold vinyl pickguard and a maple Jazz Bass® guitar neck (modern C shape) with a 20-fret, 9.5"-radius rosewood or maple fingerboard. Like many others I was skeptical of a MIM bass, but this one blows me away! The tone, the look, the feel —this bass has it all and just seems to get better the more I play it. You can get any sound you want from it with ease, but Fender has done a great job with the way it sounds flat and the neck is just superb straight out of the box. The spacing and radius of the neck is very nice and it plays incredibly smooth. Effortless. You can't beat it for the price and I've played U.S. models that cost at least twice as much that didn't sound half as good, so great job on this one, Fender!

With a P and J pick up combination now I have best of both worlds!
I can get most sounds with this bass. Period.
The jazz bass neck feels really comfortable from the beginning.
I had a Precision back in the mid eighties and always wanted to buy a new one. Well, now I own my dream bass. I think Fender should offer other options on pickguard.
Gold? well, now I kind of like it.
If you're planning on getting a bass for a wide array of genres - this is it. You won't regret buying it

A great bass with a versatile sound (thanks to the pickup combination), and nice to play. It sounds like an American.
I removed the gold pickguard of my navy blue bass for a white one.
Awesome for slap.

Hi, very impressed with this Bass .MIM value but the build is second to nothing. I cannot fault this bass with the Hybrid Body and Neck plus the pick up combination. The neck is fast and very Jazz narrow at the end so its quick to get around. I am delighted personally I like the Chrome red and maple combination its bright powerful sound being Active is versatile and when you need it has all the grunt and power you ever will need.
Straight out of the box, it was set up perfectly and that's what I wanted but past experience has taught me often, this is not the way a guitar comes, then you have to spend time getting the action adjusted.. Not with this Fender its as good as it gets..My best buy and I'm going to keep her .. she's mine !!

This is my first bass, so I might not know too much about how it compares with others, but I really like it. The bass feels very comfortable in my hands. I've borrowed other basses from my friends to try them out, but I've yet to find a neck that feels as good as the jazz-style neck on this instrument. The 2 pickups gives the bass versatility, which is very useful since sometimes I have to play vastly different styles of music (I personally enjoy heavy metal and hard rock, but sometimes my band want to play pop songs).
Overall, this is one of my most prized possessions, and I think it's a very good bass.

I was skeptical of a MIM instrument, but after trying several other models this one was the best choice for me. The smooth playability of the J-bass neck (+ rosewood warmth) with the look and feel of the P-bass makes this bass hard to beat. The wide range of tones you can get with the J&P bass pickups and active eq seems endlesss. I have been playing for over 25 years and this bass can handle all of the music styles you can throw at it. The craftmanship was surprisingly of high quality and a great value at this price range. Over the years I had heard negative feedback in regard to Fender MIM products - not the case with this one. One slight negative is I would have liked more options for the pickguard. I can see how the gold pickguard would turn some people off. I have grown to like it even after considering a custom replacement. You are getting a bass that has the look playability and sounds of a "high end" Fender model at what I would call a bargain price.

Smooth playing bass all around. Maple fretboard impressed me more than the rosewood.

I bought the Deluxe P-Bass Special in Blizzard Pearl and really enjoy the looks and the features of this bass. This is a great combination of the Jazz Bass and the P-Bass. The smaller body of one, combined with the narrower neck of the other, make it very easy to handle and play. I couldn't think of any good reason to not get this bass since you get a P-Bass plus a lot more options for sound. The P-Bass pickup gives you the classic P-Bass sound, the Jazz Bass pickups give you an added dimension that I use often. You can use either the P-Bass pickup or the Jazz Bass pickup exclusively, or you can pan to any point across both pickups quickly to give you the exact sound you want depending on the number you are playing. Combine this with the tone controls and you can get about any bass sound out of this instrument that you need.
