I just bought a black Sonoran and really like it. I have several guitars, and have built two of them, so I’m probably a bit certifiable for the loony bin. They range from a 1977 Guild D40, to an early 60’s Ariana that I bought from a friend after he decided that he really didn’t want to make the tips of his fingers bleed. I came upon the Fender Sonoran in a St. John’s Music shop in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The shop luthier (nice thing about this Canadian chain of stores is that they have one) had ensured that the setup of the guitar was good – the strings were as close to the neck as possible without introducing buzz, even when a capo was placed up and down the fretboard. The Stratocaster maple neck is comfortable to my fingers, and the whole guitar looks “right”. (My 86 year old uncle-in-law said so.) As well, the “tight” dreadnaught black body is comfortable. It seems to be on the smaller end of the dreadnought range, and sports a contrasting white ivoroid pick-guard and similar while binding. As I said – it really does look good, and feels comfortable.
It also sounds good, both plugged in and unplugged. Unplugged, it’s full sounding without getting muddy in the lower strings, and there’s no problem playing up the neck. The frets don’t even hint at catching the sides of my fingers. When plugged in, the controls work well, actually making a difference in the range of sounds you get out of it. I have found that many of the controls with add-on acoustic pickups are not designed to give much tone range.
The built in tuner is a nice bonus – don’t have to carry a separate one - and the battery is easy to replace. For the price I don’t know how Fender manages to produce such a great instrument. It’s got everything I need, or really want for gigs, and I didn’t have to break the bank to get it.
In my opinion, Fender have really done a good job on this one.

I have had the pleasure of playing and owning many high end Fender basses and guitars over the years and found myself wanting to add an acoustic to my collection. I played everything from the Custom Shop series to this California series and after having owned this guitar for a week now, I can positively say that I made the right choice! Why buy something for $5000 when its all here for $500!!!!!!!!!!!!! The design is incredible, plays perfectly and sounds so deep yet bright; the action is a little higher than I would have liked but after having got used to the design I wouldn't have it any other way! what a great guitar, a fantastic buy; if you don't buy one of these and you choose something else, then you're crazy!!!!!!!!

I bought this guitar when I went down to North Carolina August of 2013. I went to Guitar Center hoping to walk out with a new acoustic. When I saw the Sonoran SCE i knew i wanted it, the only question was... Does it play and sound as good as it looks? I tried the guitar out and fell in love. The tone and resonance was very good. It played pretty well but did need a bit of a neck adjustment, which the people at GC did for me. The Fishman Isys III has a nice sound when plugged into an amp. The finish on the guitar is very nice. The guitar is affordable on just about any budget as well. The Fender Sonoran SCE is my favorite guitar that I own. If it ever broke or got stolen I would not hesitate to get another. GREAT INSTRUMENT!

Just let down by poor set up

I was looking for a electro acoustic for just a few live numbers that would look the part with my red strats and was easy to play, The SCE was my first choice but spoiled by the 5mm string action after the 12th fret that made it not so easy to play when swapping guitars, the very reason I needed a guitar with the body the 'cut away'. A full Luthier set up corrected the faults and now I would never part with it. For the low cost paid for the guitar the extra paid for the set up was worth while and still kept it cost effective. Fantastic sound from the Fishman pickup, good effective EQ and an accurate tuner. A great package. Excellent finish as well and the tuning is very stable. Very pleased with the SCE now just a shame the playability was poor from new.

Fender Sonoran Sce

I've been playing guitar for just over 10 years now. I usually play electrics and have built up a nice collection of high-end Fenders, Gibsons, Ibanez's etc. I was on the hunt for a new acoustic guitar when I came across this Sonoran Sce. I played quite a number of expensive models including Ovation, Gibson, Taylor and Martins. In fact, I played almost every acoustic in my local music shops.

I was drawn to the Fender mainly because I liked the look of the headstock, the natural finish and was after something with a cutaway. After playing all of these guitars, I can honestly say that the playability and tone of this guitar are unbelievable. In term of sound, it rivals every guitar I played in in terms of playability, none came close.

The fishman pickup sounds great plugged in, but I must say, it's nothing particularly special. It does sound good and gets the job done, but it doesn't have anything over any of the other electro acoustics I've played and owned. The tuning feature is very useful when I'm songwriting and don't want to bother plugging into pedal boards. The tuners aren't branded which suggests they are cheap but they seem very tight and are holding up great. The top wood is nice and the back and sides seem very firm and of a good quality.

Hi Fender, just want to say that I love this guitar, I tryed to play in the Tim Armstrong model, but I prefer this Sonoran SCE. The Tim Amstrong can be played louder. This Sonoran is very easy to play, have a great sound when pluged in my combo amplifier. The construction is nice, the eletronics great, My rate is 4 only because of the fretboard doesn´t came in Ebony :) I understand that the price will raise up but it will be the perfect guitar with that. Hope more people try and buy this guitar. It´s a good relationship between quality and price.

Love this guitar, mine's classic black. Had it less than a year. Admittedly, grabbed it off the wall because of the looks; cutaway, black, headstock... but then I plugged it in. It is just so nicely balanced to my ear, although the action is a little higher out of the box than what I usually like. I opted to try to live with it first, and that has been a good choice so far. Get lots of compliments on it, both sound and looks. I play through a Behringer B212D or whatever the house has, and its tone is so mellow, but not flat or colorless. To the contrary, it's rather shimmery, but even tempered. Suits my voice and music well. It feels good. Like the on board electronics, (still like a tuner pedal better for accuracy), and it goes through batteries like crazy but that could be my fault. ;) Love that pick guard; big, heavy, but pretty. Wish the position markers were as pretty... hint, hint... (I'm thinking stars, actually...) The compensated saddle is different for me, but so far, so good. I use the capo a good bit and it tunes right up and back quickly without a lot of fuss.
I traded in another guitar and bought during a trade in event, so I got a wonderful deal on a wonderful guitar. Think she will be with me for long while, even after I "move up". Love this baby. Puts me in a bad position, though; now I have 2 acoustics that I probably won't part with... what to trade next time??? :D

Amateur Gospel Bluegrass

I purchased a left handed version of the Sonoran SCE about four months ago. I own some higher priced guitars from different manufacturers but I keep coming back to this Sonoran. Over the years I have bought and sold quite a few acoustic electric guitars. My first A/E guitar was a Fender and at the time I thought it was a pretty good guitar. As my skill improved, I bought Gibsons, Martins, Guilds, Takamines and a few other brands just for comparisons. Out of the eleven A/E's that I have kept, this Sonoran is my best guitar for the price. Over the years Fender has continually improved this guitar in all catagories. It is a very nice looking guitar plus the new neck makes it very easy to play. The solid top with the bone nut & saddle gives it a very good balanced sound whether picking single notes or strumming chords. The Fishman electronics has plenty of tone shaping adjustments to get the sound you like plus the onboard tuner is very handy, too. The front strap pin is another nice upgrade along with the newer pickguard color and shape. The guitar stays in tune very well and the action was just right when it came out of the box.

As far as amps go, I play through a Fender Acoustasonic Ultralight Amp Head & Cabinet. Unfortunately these amps have been discontinued. IMHO, this guitar & amp sound awesome together.

I highly recommend buying this guitar. Sometimes you can get a good deal on a Sonoran SCE online. That's where I got mine.

Happy picking!

Hello There,
This is more of a review on how it lasts, more then how it was when I got it. I got the SCE in black going on 4 years ago. It was my first "professional" acoustic, and I admit, I was very taken with it. The tone, playability, and comfort were what sold me, plus a %30 discount (with bag). After owning it, playing it in many bands, shows, and taking her on the road, she is still an exceptional guitar for the price. My only qualms, are that the electronics are unbalanced, for even with EQ it still seems either too bright or too dark. Which may be because of how the wire sits under the bridge (Note: I have a previous model before the "viking" bridge, so this maybe Fender's solution), and the headstock, for as awesome as it is, it can't fit in many guitar cases. But the quality of the construction, the tone (best used with finger-picking), the Strat neck, and the overall comfortably of playing it, has not changed at all in the years. I highly recommend this model over most of their other line, and pretty much any acoustic within the $300-$500 price range.
