This was the first guitar that I ever ordered online. I am religious about always playing the guitar in person first before buying it. However this one was a monster deal, so I jumped on it. Out of the box, it played okay. With a quick set up and new strings (Dean Markley 11-52's), the guitar played great. The only issue I had was the bridge would buzz like crazy. I tried everything to fix it, and eventually I ended up purchasing a mustang bridge to try and combat that and the strings popping off the saddles. This was about a week after purchase. Soon thereafter, my high E began constantly breaking. I at first thought that it was a flaw in the brand new strings, but sure enough it was the guitar breaking it. I tried to bevel the edge of the string hole at the vibrato end to smooth it out. I tried putting the stock bridge back on. Nothing was working. I tried gigging it once and broke the high E about 2 songs into the set. Finally after three weeks and five packs of strings, I made the decision to return the guitar. I loved the feel and sound of it. The bridge pickup roared with the best of them, while the neck pickup could clean up nicely and get a full, fat sound when pushed. I adored the neck. It played so nicely. However, I couldn't trust the guitar to do the one thing that I asked of it, be reliable while gigging. I do miss the guitar, but I believe I made the right decision. Buyer beware, the bridge might cause you some problems.

Excellent finishing and paint work. Love the sunburst. The Seymour designed P90 is an excellent pickup. Gives a full & warm tone. The bridge pickup could be better when playing with distortion it just doesn't give the punch that I like. The bridge as other reviews have highlighted does gives a little buzz. The strings also do not sit well in the saddle when playing hard. It would have been a perfect guitar if the bridge pickup could provide higher output and Adjusto-Matic™ bridge is used in its place for me.

The best thing about this guitar is the body shape - Jazzmasters are so comfortable to play! Soundwise it's very versatile; classic Jazzmaster tones from the neck pickup, the humbucker is great with distortion. Playing clean with both pickups simultaneously gives a lovely tone.
Only problem with the guitar is the bridge. Buzzed a lot when new, a set up fixed the problem but it still needs a little DIY from time to time - a minor annoyance rather than a major problem. Putting on an Adjust-o-matic instead of the standard Jazzmaster bridge would have been the difference between a very good and an excellent guitar.
If you shop around you can get a great price (I paid only £350 for mine) and it's outstanding value for the money. If I could go back in time and buy something else instead, would I? Not a chance.
Other guitars to consider: The closest thing to the Blacktop one is the Modern Player Jazzmaster. The MP has an Adjust-o-matic bridge so should buzz less, but it also only has humbuckers so won't sound like a 'traditional' Jazzmaster. Something to consider if you're deciding between those two.

I've owned this guitar for almost a year now. It sounds and plays great! I've only had one problem with the bridge, but other than that I've had no problems. I would recommend this guitar to anyone who likes to play jazz, blues, or rock. The humbucker in the bridge position really gives the guitar a dirtier tone, whereas the single coil pickup in the neck position gives the guitar a really warm, soft tone. When you play them together it gives a really nice dynamic to the sound of the guitar.

This was the first Fender guitar I ever bought. I paid £501 for the sunburst blacktop jazzmaster from richtone music in my home town Sheffield. The first thing I noticed on this guitar was how great the finish was and how well made the instrument felt in my hands. When I plugged it in, I had it going through a Fender Deluxe reverb amplifier. The sounds was very impressive. Surprisingly it was a lot brighter than I expect, This was perfect for me as I play jangle pop (The Smiths, R.E.M. etc etc) The guitar overall is a great piece of craftsmanship and kicks out an excellent tone. Highly Recommended guitar for the little money it is.

the blacktop jazzmaster has exceeded my expectations on so many levels! not only does it look great but it play's like a dream!! it stay's in tune well, but my only criticism is that the stings sometimes slip out of place if you pluck them too hard.

The Jazzmaster Blacktop, what a beautiful guitar. It looks amazing and plays like a beaut. The selling point for me was the bridge humbucker, when you put the toggle to the middle you get the warm, clean sound of the single coil mixed with medium output humbucker...what a lovely tone. This is an amazing guitar. For the money, you can't beat this jazzmaster!
