The names of few rock bassists have become more synonymous with fretless bass than that of session great Tony Franklin. Like the man who designed it, the Tony Franklin Fretless Precision Bass® guitar takes a classic instrument to a new level, with an alder body and modern C-shaped maple neck with an unfinished and unfretted ebony fingerboard with side dot position markers. Other features include vintage tuners, Hipshot® Bass Xtender drop-D tuner on the E string, and three-way pickguard switch that controls an American Series Precision Bass neck pickup and a Tony Franklin signature Jazz Bass® bridge pickup with hex-screw lugs and ceramic bar magnets.

The first time that Fender uses an ebony fretless fingerboard and the result is awesome! The attack, strings' response, crystal sound and playability of this bass is excellent. Honestly, I didn't expect from a Precision Bass to feel and sound that way (however, they are much more versatile instruments). It seems that a whole new chapter opens in fretless Fenders. I usually play several fretless basses from constructors that have built their name on these, but T.F. Precision is the one providing such versatility in sound -combining the excellent values of P.Bass and these of a first class rated fretless-, that makes the others seem more focused on a strictly jazzy playing, however not always with the optimum results.
In one word: A "chameleon" that I use in studio and on stage giving me the best!
Well done Fender. Well done!

After a lot of research using the net, bass forums, you tube etc, I finally got an opportunity to try a new 2013, sunburst right out of the box,
the action and neck feel were incredible, ( I want all my basses to feel this way ). The tone quality, and versatility from the pickups, fantastic.
The Hip shot Drop D Tuner works great also adding to versatility. The 3-way split switch for the pickup selection is exactly what I needed, simplicity. I really wanted the black on black and was able to find one, after trying it out, it was a 2012 and been hanging around awhile - same silky feel, great tone as the sunburst I tried, a testament to the build quality.
