Marcus Miller's combination of soulful groove and astounding technical ability has made him one of the jazz world's preeminent virtuoso bassists. Fender's stylish five-string Marcus Miller Jazz Bass® V guitar is soulful and astounding, too. It has an ash body, distinctive black pickguard/control plate, one-piece C-shaped maple neck, 7.25"-radius maple fingerboard with white binding and white pearl block inlays, Posiflex™ graphite neck support rods, and satin finish (gloss finish on the headstock, plus Miller's signature). Great tone comes from a pair of custom vintage-style Jazz Bass single-coil pickups and an 18-volt active preamp; the two-band active EQ has an active/passive mini-toggle switch. Other features include a chrome neck pickup cover, knurled chrome dome knobs on the volume controls and black Jazz Bass knobs on the tone controls, contoured heel and asymmetrical five-bolt neck plate.

I have owned a couple of electric basses (Warwick, MusicMan, Takamine Fender) and now I wanted a 5 string...
After playing different models from different manufacturers I ended up in buying this Marcus Miller V.
I was handed a brand new bass which was wired up in the wrong way and would not work in active mode but after looking into it, the problem could be resolved without having to return the bass to the factory. Although a serious issue for Fender, I still feel very happy with the comunication with them.
I particularly love the sound and the playability of his bass. Here Fender found the perfect compromise of width of the neck and hence distance between the 5 strings (at least for me and my hand/finger size). The sound and playability of the B-string is very good! I found it difficult to find a 5-string which poves to be as balanced as this Marcus Miller V.

I tried one of these in my local music shop and was instantly hooked. Not usually a fan of 5-strings but I was finding I needed to use one more and more often and didn't enjoy playing the midrange one I had. I was looking for something I would enjoy as much as my top range 4 strings, and quite frankly this is the best 5 string bass I have ever played. In this price bracket there is quite a lot of choice and believe me I've tried pretty much everything available. When I picked it up I was amazed by how light it felt. The neck of this bass is sheer Heaven! Personally I believe the Geddy Lee neck is the best that Fender make and this is like a 5 string version. I prefer a lighter gauge and a low action but this felt perfect to me with it's standard factory setup and strings. The string spacing makes slapping easy. There is a huge range of tonal variation with this bass. It can be adjusted to suit pretty much every style of music I play. Apparently Marcus worked very closely with Fender to develop this bass to his exact specifications and this is immediately evident from the first touch. Normally I make upgrades to basses that I buy, but I can honestly say that this bass is pretty much perfect as it is. The only thing I have done is removed the pickup cover and swapped the plastic tone knobs for the same chrome barrels as the volume controls.
This is rapidly becoming my favourite bass and from a professional point of view, if I was told I could only keep one bass from my fairly large collection, it would have to be this one. As far as I'm concerned, I will never need to buy another 5 string bass!

I bought this bass new from a dealer in Baton Rouge. I experienced poor quality issues, beginning with a poor treble response. I brought it back to the dealer, where it was sent to an authorized repair center in Hammond LA. When I received the bass back, the issue was still present. The repair center said it was the tone board and replaced it. I think. Still disappointed, I bought a John East, Marcus Miller preamp and installed it. Still not what I wanted. Thinking I had a bad preamp, I sent it back to the dealer I bought it from. They checked it out and sent it back, saying it worked fine. I then decided to reinstall it, but totally disassembled the electronics. Much to my dismay, I discovered the pickups were not wired in properly. After wiring them in correctly, the preamp worked and the bass sounded much better.
I also had the upper strap mount pull out while gigging one night. A toothpick and a screwdriver and I was back in action. While I might consider buying a vintage Jazz, I am less than impressed with the quality of Fender.
