All Rounder Bass

I own the 98/99 American deluxe p-bass. This bass delivers the best range of tones you will ever need: you can play the vintage precision sound or otherwise use the classic jazz bass tone in a modern style with the active circuitry. Though my model has a modern hum-bucker instead of the jazz pickup, with this bass you have the option to switch between an active or passive bass, which is a mayor upgrade. Anyway, with the versatility, elegant style, 3 EQ band and everything else that is given with this bass, you will finally see yourself using the precision pickup more often than you imagine, because that sound is non replaceable... in the end what its a p-bass (that can give you the jazz and modern bass sound if you wish or need so).

Last Bass I'll Ever Need

This is a fine instrument. Full stop. Playability, weight, balance, fit, feel, finish, and build quality are all superb. The pickups are hot, even without the active circuitry. The ability to get "true bypass" of the active circuitry was one of the things that initially attracted me to this model and it works great! It's like having two separate basses available, all at the flip of a switch. I have a '74 fretless P-bass, a '78 Gibson RD Artist, and a 2012 Jaguar. Tonally, this American Deluxe is like having them all combined into one extremely playable (and great-looking) package. Like the title of the review says, I'm pretty sure this is the last bass that I will ever need.

The best of both worlds

(5.0)
Longtooth on February 18, 2013
Professional Classic Rock

Is this a PBass or a JBass? Well, it's actually BOTH, and everything in between! If you're looking for that classic Precision Bass growl, you have the split single-coil P pickup. If you want that iconic Jazz Bass sound, there's the N3 Noiseless J pickup. If you want the best of both worlds, leave the pot in the mid position, or, just a tweak either way will get you a custom blend of the two best sounding bass guitars known to man! This bass played great right off the wall with the factory setup. Very impressive. The active/passive mini-toggle switch is a handy addition in case the two 9 volt batteries start losing their juice. Fit and finish is excellent, typical of the American Deluxe series. I bought the black version with the maple neck almost a year ago, and I'm very pleased with it. I never thought I could love another bass as much as my 5 year old American Deluxe Jazz Bass V, but this PBass is coming very close. My one and only complaint, (and this goes for the JBass as well) is that when I went to replace strings on both basses, I found that a screw had fallen out of one of the tuners. Fender and Hipshot quickly sent me new ones, and a drop of Locktite will ensure that they stay put. If you can't decide between the P and J basses, this is the guitar for you!
