U.K. Racer buys Prince’s gold Stratocaster for $100,000

U.K. Formula One racing driver Lewis Hamilton has bought Prince’s gold Stratocaster guitar at auction for £61,100 ($100,000), the enigmatic musician revealed in a rare television appearance on Wednesday night, April 13.

As a guest on U.S. cable channel TBS’s Lopez Tonight that evening, Prince discussed his recent auction to raise funds for various arts, education and environmental charities. He acknowledged that he has recently raised $2 million and revealed that “brother Lewis Hamilton, the racing car driver” had placed the winning bid for the guitar.

Prince had the unusual instrument—an all-gold Fender Stratocaster—with him in the studio as he chatted with host George Lopez. Cradling the instrument on camera, His Royal Badness grinned and told the audience, “It’s gonna be hard to part with this.”

Hamilton, who races for England’s McLaren team, was the 2008 Formula One world champion.
