Two Door Cinema Club Heat Up ACL with Scorching Set

When Two Door Cinema Club took the Bud Light Stage Sunday at the Austin City Limits music festival, things were getting hot and humid, and the field itself was still muddy from the previous day’s rain.

But despite the less-than-ideal conditions, it was perfect for the Irish indie rockers.

A huge crowd was eager to hear Two Door offer their version of power pop with peppy beats and choruses that are easy to scream back to the band.

Two Door Cinema Club revved things up early with their latest single, “Sleep Alone,” from their 2012 effort, Beacon. The rolling drums were broken up by a surf-inspired undertone that grew more sweeping by the verse, just prepping everyone for the payoff.

Two Door Cinema Club didn’t need any bombastic pyrotechnics or anything, though. If anything, the band’s catchy beats, tight harmonies and building melodies make Beacon an easy listen, and the tracks might even sound better live than on the album.

Highlights to the ACL show included other Beacon hits like “Sun,” “Next Year” and “Handshake” before their epic closer, “What You Know” off 2010’s Tourist History, brought things home.

The finale turned into a super-dancer that had the entire crowd jumping in the relentless sun, dehydration be damned.

Two Door Cinema Club had previously played ACL in 2010, but at that point, it was a much-smaller stage. Frontman Alex Trimble noted that fact, thanking the audience for sticking with them through their six years as a real band.

That support culminated in Sunday’s show on the largest-capacity venue in Zilker Park.

“It’s all because of you guys that we got here,” Trimble said.

The devoted and sweaty Two Door Cinema Club fans singing along to nearly every word were glad to oblige.
