Upon listening to the Neighbourhood’s 2013 debut album I Love You, one might pick up on some slight hip-hop influences. But the Los Angeles-based band is diving deep into those waters with an upcoming mixtape called #000000 & #FFFFFF that features several rap artists.
“#000000 & #FFFFFF is a diary of songs that are inspired by our thoughts while on the road,” said vocalist Jesse Rutherford. “It exposes our anxiety, rejoices in our achievement and expresses our ability to create whatever the f**k we want. It’s our freedom to explore popular music as we know it. It’s not us as a band… it’s us as a sound.”
Additionally, guitarist Zach Abels recently talked with MusicRadar about the sounds he is known for on stage, much of which he gets from his Fender Jazzmaster.
“That’s my main guitar, a ’78 Jazzmaster,” he said. ”We live in Thousand Oaks, and we know this guy in town – he’s a lot older than us – and he was in a band called Mellowdrone. We really looked up to them, and I looked up to him as a guitarist. When Mellowdone broke up, he wound up selling the guitar to me. So that’s the main Jazzmaster I use. It’s pretty cool.”
Abels also talked about some other guitars he recently acquired.
“I have a brand-new Fender Mustang that’s pretty dope,” he continued. “And I just got a new Custom Jazzmaster, which Fender made for me. It looks kind of like my main Jazzmaster, but it’s all black and it’s really cool. I’m a huge Fender fan and a big Jazzmaster fan. They’re great guitars. They feel really cool and the tones are pretty versatile. I love them.”
