By auctioning off several rare guitars – Fenders included – renowned actor Richard Gere recently raised nearly $1 million for charity.
More than 100 guitars and amps from Gere’s expansive collection were sold Thursday by Christie’s, with $936, 438 collected.
One of the prizes was a 1954 solid-body Fender Stratocaster that Gere discusses in this video:
More well-known for his acting after appearing in such films as Pretty Women and An Officer And A Gentleman, Gere told Guitar Afficionado that he never had a plan to be a serious guitar collector, but he simply couldn’t avoid the storefronts.
“There’s a generosity of spirit amongst guitarists,” he said. ”Almost every city I’ve ever been in has at least one shop that sells old guitars and has a guy who works there who loves them and has the right vibe. You can just see it there for hours and play with no hurry.”
