Red Hot Chili Peppers Invade Fallon with Will Ferrell

A battle that can trace its beginnings back to February finally came to a head this week, as actor Will Ferrell and Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers faced off in a drum battle on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.

For years, fans have talked about the resemblance between the iconic funnyman and drummer, so much so that Ferrell discussed it on a Reddit AMA.

“It has been acknowledged many times that myself and Chad Smith, drummer for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, share a resemblance to each other,” Ferrell wrote. “A lot of people think that it’s me playing for the Red Hot Chili Peppers. But that would be an insult to Chad Smith. The truth of the matter is there is no Will Ferrell. Only Chad Smith.”

Smith then threw down the gauntlet of a drum battle, with the winner receiving a golden cowbell, which Ferrell gamely accepted provided they raise $300,000 for the charities Cancer for College and Little Kids Rock.

The dopplegangers sat on host Jimmy Fallon’s set for an interview before getting behind their respective drum kits.  Of course, Ferrell had a wildcard up his sleeve, as he pulled out a cowbell and went to town as Smith’s Chili Peppers bandmates came out to perform Blue Oyster Cult’s “Don’t Fear the Reaper,” a callback to a classic Saturday Night Live sketch.

In addition, the Red Hot Chili Peppers joined the Roots for smoking renditions of “Give It Away” and Funkadelic’s “Standing on the Verge of Getting it On.”  Watch all the action unfold in the clips below.
