Rare Cobain Photo Gets Spin's August Cover

Spin magazine has dedicated its August issue to celebrating the upcoming 20th anniversary of Nirvana’s landmark album, Nevermind. The magazine cover will feature an underwater photo of Kurt Cobain shot on Oct. 28, 1991, by photographer Kirk Weddle.

Weddle, wanting to mimic the album’s cover image, snapped more than 200 images during the commissioned shoot — many of which have remained unseen.

“I’ve just kept them stacked in a closet, unorganized,” Weddle tells Spin.

The issue includes interviews with Eddie Vedder, Dave Grohl, Flea, R.E.M.’s Peter Buck, Jeff Tweedy, Nirvana manager Danny Goldberg and others, who reflect on the grunge movement and the album’s lasting impact. Younger artists like the Black Keys and Against Me! also open up about how the album affected their youth.

Spin also tapped artists EMA, Meat Puppies, Surfer Blood, Titus Andronicus and others to cover one track each from Nevermind. The tribute album will be available for FREE download on Spin‘s Facebook page on July 19.
