Fender is saddened to learn of the passing of noted guitar maker Philip Kubicki.
Kubicki, 69, passed away March 18 in New Hampshire, where he retired after a long and acclaimed instrument-making career in Southern California.
Perhaps best known for the distinctive and innovative “Factor” bass guitars he developed in the mid 1980s, Kubicki enjoyed a half-century-plus career that began in the 1960s and included a renowned stint at Fender during that decade.
Most notably during his Fender tenure, Kubicki built the custom rosewood Telecaster played by George Harrison on final Beatles album Let It Be and during the famous 42-minute London “rooftop concert” on the afternoon of Jan. 30, 1969.
“I remember when I saw the guitar for the first time in the Let It Be film,” Kubicki said, as quoted in author Andy Babiuk’s Beatles Gear. “I was so thrilled I almost jumped out of my seat.”
Fender extends its heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Phil Kubicki.
