Spin magazine recently got Fender signature artist Johnny Marr on the phone to comment on four iconic albums from his iconic band, The Smiths.
In all, The Smiths, Meat is Murder, The Queen is Dead and Strangeways, Here We Come are all covered in the interview.
Interestingly enough, Marr called Strangeways his favorite Smiths’ album.
“Just look at a song like ‘Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me,’” Marr said. ”It sounds like no other rock group before or since. It managed to be beautiful and heavy without having the elements that people usually associate with heavy music. It’s not a macho song.
“And Morrissey’s singing on it is really great. ‘Stop Me If You Think You’ve Heard This One Before’ is another fantastic one. ‘Unhappy Birthday’ is a nice acoustic moment. The whole thing just has a spirit to it that I love.”
