Joe Bonamassa got the chance to channel the spirit of one of his idols when he borrowed Rory Gallagher’s iconic 1961 Fender Stratocaster during a performance at London’s Royal Albert Hall in March.
Bonamassa played the sunburst guitar on the tracks “Sloe Gin,” which can be seen in the video below, and “The Ballad of John Henry.”
Even though Gallagher’s brother, Donal Gallagher, had retired the guitar, Bonamassa was honored to be able to take it out on stage again.
“Donal Gallagher was supremely nice enough to bring me Rory’s Strat to the Hammersmith Apollo in 2011 and once again this year to the Royal Albert Hall, and I got to play it,” Bonamassa said in a statement. As a fan that was the high point of my life. He’d played the guitar so much that he’d worn down the contours in certain places; you felt where his hands would have played. It was pretty surreal.”
