J. Mascis and Cobra Verde Form New Band

Sweet Apple––comprised of Dinosaur Jr.’s J. Mascis, Dave Sweetapple (Mascis’ bassist in side-project Witch) and a few members of Cobra Verde––will release their debut album, Love & Desperation on April 20.

The band was born by accident and friendship…

Days after the loss of his mother, Cobra Verde singer-guitarist John Petkovic got in his car heading eastward.

“My mother had just died after a long, horrible illness,” he says. “And I’d been totally devastated by so many things, all at once. I’d lost so much weight. I couldn’t eat or sleep. All I did was smoke cigarettes, one and after another after another.”

So he smoked, listened to music and kept driving––never thinking about where he was going or where he’d end up.

Cue New England, the home of long-time friends Sweetapple and Mascis, who told John to start writing some songs so they could start a band. Within weeks, and after recruiting Cobra Verde guitarist Tim Parnin, they started working on the album.

Single “Do You Remember” is available for a listen on Sweet Apple’s MySpace page. The band is currently working on a video for the opening track, and has plans to tour and perform at South by Southwest in March.
