Hear J Mascis and Sharon Van Etten Cover John Denver

john-denver-tribute
J Mascis and Sharon Van Etten recently teamed up to cover “Prisoners” by John Denver as part of a tribute to the late singer/songwriter.

The above sentence is not a ruse.

The Dinosaur Jr. frontman lends his growling guitar and unique voice to the track, with help from the sweet-sounding Van Etten.  The result is a version that would fit right in during the grunge movement of the early 1990s, but something that works as an inventive homage to Denver.

Other artists participating in The Music is You include Dave Matthews, My Morning Jacket, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes, and Evan Dando.  The album is slated to drop April 2.

You can listen to “Prisoners” over on Pitchfork here and watch a trailer for the album below.
