Guitar Player Names The 50 Greatest Rhythm Guitarists

Oftentimes, rhythm guitarists are overshadowed by their lead partners, but October’s issue of Guitar Player magazine makes them front and center by naming the 50 greatest players in that role.

An obvious choice making the cut is Jimi Hendrix, a legend behind endless contributions to music (and a guitarist with a chord nicknamed after him!).

“A school unto itself, Hendrix’s rhythm playing in many ways feels like an even deeper ocean than his astounding soloing,” said Guitar Player.

Another rhythm guitar master on the list is Telecaster-armed Keith Richards, whom the magazine named “rock and roll’s high priest of groove.” Rightfully so — you can’t help but to get your groove on with jams like “Happy,” or mellower tunes like “Angie.”

Other honorable mentions made by Guitar Player include punk-rock rhythm guitar goddess Chrissie Hynde and funk master Tony Maiden.

Check out who else made it on the list by getting your copy of Guitar Player here.

Taste, restraint and just awesome tone. These are the 3 major points you wanna look at when sizing up a truly great rhythm guitarist. No matter where you find Tony Maiden -be it onstage live or on a recording-for over 30 years and counting, he is the absolute pinnacle of those 3 elements being milked for all they\’re worth…PERIOD. I can scarcely imagine why he would not be at or very near the top of anyone\’s list who really knows rhythm guitar , not just a bunch of buzz rhetoric ABOUT rhythm guitar…there\’s a HUGE difference.
If I may, I\’d like to suggest you take a listen to him and make all the comparisons you like. http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&v=qcD3xwukRmY This particular video is merely a starting point , as you know , there are many more examples in the sidebar:
I\’m certain the outcome will support all that I\’ve said about Tony Maiden and then some. Enjoy!

Bob Weir is the greatest rhythm player in my opinion – he plays some of the best improvised rhythm guitar around, he spoon fed Jerry some fantastic harmonies/rhythms/riffs that made the Grateful Dead so incredible, and yes, I have seen him play a Telecaster.
