George Strait Wins Entertainer of the Year at 2014 ACM Awards

The stars of country music were out in full force in Las Vegas over the weekend for the Academy of Country Music Awards, hosted by Blake Shelton and Luke Bryan.

George Strait went home with the night’s cornerstone trophy, as he earned his second Entertainer of the Year award over Shelton, Bryan, Miranda Lambert and Taylor Swift. The last time Strait was named Entertainer of the Year was during the 1989 edition of the ACM Awards.

But one of the most moving points of the evening came when the legendary Merle Haggard walked across the stage to accept the academy’s Crystal Milestone Award.  As he ambled to the microphone, the capacity crowd serenaded him with “Happy Birthday” to commemorate his 77th birthday.

“Country music has been great to me all my life and it’s great again tonight,” Haggard said.

Other winners included Jason Aldean (Male Vocalist of the Year), Kacey Musgraves (Album of the Year) and the Band Perry (Vocal Group of the Year).
