Explosions in the Sky Knock Down their Wall of Sound

It’s not necessarily about the songs themselves for Texas-based post-rockers Explosions in the Sky, as their full show must be taken in to truly appreciate their greatness.

For the casual listener, it’s tough to discern the beginning and end of Explosions in the Sky songs. It’s that type of music that gets you through a day of driving, when you just want to zone out and listen to some aural fireworks.

And that’s just what EITS delivered during an hour-long set Saturday at the Lands End stage at San Francisco’s Outside Lands festival.

With three guitarists and a drummer, Explosions in the Sky are no-frills, with a starry-filter placed over the live footage that played on the giant screens serving as the gaudiest accoutrement.

Really, this is all about Explosions in the Sky – who released Take Care, Take Care, Take Care last year – creating a massive wall of music through their instruments.

It was the perfect time for a chill session, too, as several of the fans watching the show took some time to lie back in the Golden Gate Park grass and enjoyed the sonic assault.

One never knew whether that reverb-filed wave would crash down or continue to build, but one thing was for sure – Explosions in the Sky commanded attention.
