With her most recent album out since March 20, prolific jazz bassist Esperanza Spalding is making headlines everywhere.
Her latest appearance is in the April issue of Premier Guitar, where she talks about her love for fretless bass, and touches on her new record, Radio Music Society.
“I play fretless partly because frets defy my capacity to understand,” said Spalding. “Never having played a fretted instrument, the frets just… wow – I don’t know where to begin on a fretted instrument!”
Spalding’s choice of bass is the famed Fender Jaco Pastorius fretless Jazz bass, which you can see here.
Fans can expect a soulful fusion of Afro-Cuban, bop, chamber music, jazz vocals and R&B when they listen to the new album.
