Delta Spirit played their 16th (and final) South By Southwest showcase tonight with a 45-minute set at Stubb’s Barbeque in Austin, Texas. To celebrate the successful SXSW run and upcoming tour in support of their new eponymous album, the band finished the performance by gifting one lucky audience member with a new Fender Blacktop Jaguar.
Julia Durr, a student at North Texas in Denton, was the fortunate fan who was handed the new guitar from frontman Matt Vasquez, and then escorted backstage to meet the rest of Delta Spirit.
“This is definitely the greatest thing that has happened to me this week,” she said after collecting signatures from each band member.
Although she doesn’t currently play guitar, Durr promised lead singer Matt Vasquez that she’d start taking lessons, which is exactly what he was hoping for.
“It could possibly be a life-changing thing,” said Vasquez of the decision to give away Blacktop guitars throughout their upcoming tour. “When my grandma gave me my first guitar when I was 7-years old, and my neighbor kid came over and taught me how to play Come as You Are,’ that was it. It changed my life. I knew exactly what I wanted to do when I grew up, and I’ve been doing it ever since. So having that opportunity to put a guitar in somebody’s hands, who maybe hasn’t had the money to buy their first guitar or has just never had that weird serendipitous influence, is amazing. I’m so excited to possibly provide that opportunity to someone so that they either take up guitar or get serious about playing because they have a nice instrument that sounds great.”
