Florida-based newspaper Broward-Palm Beach New Times honored what would have been Leo Fender’s 102nd birthday on Wednesday, August 10, by making a list of 10 famous guitarists who loved playing Fender.
“There’s no need to argue or dispute that had it not been for Fender’s handiwork, rock ‘n’ roll and all its illegitimate children would not exist today,” says Jose Flores with the Broward-Palm Beach New Times.
Some of the guitarists who made it on the list include:
- Rock ‘n’ roll pioneer Buddy Holly, who changed the course of music and inspired thousands on his iconic ’58 Fender Stratocaster.
- Legendary virtuoso Jimi Hendrix, whose primary guitar of choice was the white, ’68 Fender Stratocaster he was seen using during the historic Woodstock concert in 1969
- Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood, who relied on his Telecaster on debut album, Pablo Honey, to (as the Broward-Palm Beach New Times notes) “provide the kick to the head that propelled them into everyone’s homes and cars.”
