In the early 1970s, a talented young British guitarist had just finished college in Southern California and was eking out a living giving guitar lessons there when a student offered to sell him a beat-up 1961 Telecaster with some unusual electronics modifications (phase switch, onboard preamp and overdrive unit). The guitarist bought the battered, hot-rodded guitar from his student for $200. Back in London in 1977, he joined a punk trio that quickly ascended to worldwide superstardom and ruled the late-1970s and early 1980s charts with a long string of hits fueled by that ’61 Telecaster. Who was the guitarist, and what famously blonde-headed trio was he in?
UPDATE: And the answer is … Andy Summers of the Police.
