I play bass in Eastern Block (now known as The Lower Caves), as a Fender artist. With the Fender American Vintage Precision Bass I feel like I have truly come home.

Let's start with aesthetics. I own the 3-tone burst model. It has a beautiful paint job. Compared to a vintage '63, the burst design is period specific. The chrome covers also lend themselves to the beauty of the bass. I wanted a bass that looked like the ones my heroes played back in the day, and now I get to have that. The AV '63 also features the period correct clay dot inlays. It adds a nice color texture to the beautiful rosewood fingerboard. Some of the fingerboards on the AV '63 are darker with a tighter grain display, while others are lighter in color with a wider grain. Mine is the latter.

As for playablity, the wider nut and mass of the C shaped neck feels better than the more modern C shaped necks. The thinner frets also give the finger to string to neck a better feel. I have strong hands and play heavily with my left hand and my right, so the overall beefy-ness of the neck feels very good to me. I thought the chrome covers would get in my way, but they aren't bad at all. I decided to leave them on. I put the Flatwound strings on that came in the case candy. The strings feel really good. I tend to play either close to the bridge or close to the neck, so there wasn't much of a change for me.

Tone wise, this bass is king. It has a really nice low end. While playing between the chrome covers, the bass has a more midrange punch with a slight bite or growl. While playing close to the neck, the bass sounds warm and smooth. The tone nob, also vintage correct, allows me to roll off the brightness if I want to play blues or country. I add a little more brightness while playing rock. It is very dynamic. The bass sounds very good recorded as well as live. I think it is the best P-Bass on the market. Go get one!

Great job you did on this bass. This is IT for me. The neck is the best feeling Fender bass neck I've ever laid my hands on. If I were to have a neck custom made for my specific biomechanics; it would be like this '63 Precision. The bass is light and very resonant. The sound is just delicious. The fit and finish is dead right, and the classic shape, red color and dark rosewood fingerboard makes it a sexy looking thing altogether. This bass is what it's all about and my new # 1.
