I own one of the original Malmsteen Strats with the dimarzios fitted. I must say that I was skeptical as first people were saying you won't like it, you will find in difficult to play, it's difficult to then revert back to a traditional fretboard etc. Well I must say that I have proved them all wrong. I found, if anything, the guitar easier to play with its lighter touch, and string bending is easier, the only slight downside if there is one is it's quite easy to slip off the edge of the fretboard when fretting the 1st and 6th strings and it is possible to bend a chord just slightly out of tune if you apply too much pressure. These items are easily overcome, overall the is an outstanding appreciative investment, superb sound and playability.

I have 2 of these wonderful guitars. The first is actually one of the 1st edition YJM Strats from 1988 which has the small headstock and the DiMarzio pickups. It is an amazing instrument. I just bought a new one and it certainly doesn't disappoint. So many great tones from these guitars that you can't get from any other instrument. The scalloped necks are simply amazing and fast and adds a whole new dimension of vibrato. If i had the money i'd buy 10 more.

Seems strange to play at first ...then the light came on with old school killer sound and bending.
Have a 2000 and a 2011. I do not need the
the tremolo.....only bark I have is the saddles they rip the pick out of your hand because the allen screws are sharp and cut the palm! Changed them out with a block saddle and new Fender self locking machine tuners added even more tone and sustain.
Can mirror any other guitar with my Super Sonic Deluxe.
Repainted the 2011 Black (Fender needs a Black model) with Frank'enwennie theme with Sparky hand painted on the back side string plate -came out great with the maple neck.
You have to have one.

Been playing nearly forty years. No longer professional but feel sufficiently experienced to comment. Own lots of Fenders including a new Eric Johson and a couple of Custom Shop Strats. My YJM Strat was delivered a few hours ago. First impression was that the guitar was very poorly set-up. Fret ends were sharp (not the tang portion but the fret end itself). Strings don't run centre down the neck so I keep pulling the high E off the fretboard (easy fix but I shouldn't have to). Nut is not cut deep enough. Especially the high E. I'll have to get that professionally fixed. Scalloping is great for 'digging in'. Really like it. Sounds great dirty too (though no particular character or sparkle clean and I can see that a five-way would be kind of redundant for that reason). My guitar case was also missing the straplocks. They're being supplied as a follow-up item. I think I'll just need to persist with this guitar. It's not the instant love I felt with my Eric Johnson maple neck (what a wonderful guitar, folks). Anyway, a little more QC and this'd be great too. Thanks. Brian.

Wow. the price sure went up on this guitar. I picked mine up brand new in 2008 for $1100. The price has doubled I see...but with good reason (I guess). People like to diss yngwie because he's a bad ass guitar player who is not ashamed to acknowledge that fact, so naturally there'll be a lot of haters and skeptics about this model strat. Yngwie has contributed a lot to what metal is today and it's sad that people just hate on him because he's so good. For me, I did research on the guitar then went to Hot Licks in Aiea to try it out. I was amazed by the feel of the neck and it's ease of playability. When I let my friends play it, they trip out on how good the neck feels as well as the tone. If you play this guitar through a heavily driven big amp, you'll get all kinds of unreal tones and screams out of it (especially with the tremolo). I'm not a shredding-leads kind of guy, but I noticed when you play this guitar, your chops will definitely improve over time due to the scalloped neck. I love this guitar and will keep it for as long as I can.
Ok I tried this guitar as a bit of a joke.
Scalloped frets with no wood supporting the strings? Metal oriented tone?
High supplied action? Relatively low mounted pickups (obviously both of these points are adjustable).
I like dirty guitar sounds but I like a wide range of them so my guitars go from Strats to Jems.
Well I am pleased to report that the design of the guitar combined with the setup makes for a truly versatile guitar.
Yes it can even do clean Strat sounds.
And when you want to shred this guitar is so focused and never harsh sounding.
A real keeper! Complaints? Well the no load tone pot clicks so hard into place that you can't simply roll it back with your little finger - you have to grab it and turn with two fingers and this takes an age to do when you are playing. Fortunately mine was only fitted with one and not two.

I bought my first (of 2) Yngwie Malmsteen Signature Strats a couple of years ago and they are the best guitars I have ever owned. I had the guitars set up with a slightly lower action than the factory setup and it plays like a dream. The tremolo stays in tune which is impressive with a vintage style trem. It took a little while to get used to the scalloped fretboard, as I found I would sometimes push the string off the neck on the high E, but once I was used to it I find it hard to go back to a non-scalloped fretboard. The pickups are quiet and have that full Yngwie tone that any fan of Yngwie's loves and I'm sure anyone with an ear for a good guitar tone would appreciate. Bottom line is that the guitars were worth every cent and with it's versatility it fits any guitar style and really that is what Stratocasters have always been famous for.
