I went to a local dealer in Orange County (Jim's Music Center) intent on purchasing a new Stratocaster. I already knew I wanted an HSS configuration and had heard Texas Special pickups a few times, so I immediately went for... a completely different Strat.
I grabbed a Mexican Strat and took it to their fancy room to check it out. It played quite well. I kept my back to the guitars in there so I wouldn't be tempted. Then I asked about the American Special HSS and they handed me one.
It sounded amazing. Felt almost perfect. Looked very good. I could feel that it was absolutely a better guitar than the MIM I'd previously played, and knew I made a mistake by picking it up (and, of course, knew I had to have one).
So I allowed myself to turn around and look at the guitars in the room.
And I saw it. The FSR AMERICAN SPECIAL STRATOCASTER® HSS ASH. What a thing of beauty. It struck me instantly. The wood untouched by obfuscating visuals. The vintage soul of the thing.
I picked it up. Within seconds, I decided it was my guitar.
It sounds like a dream, plays smooth and tight, bends for miles, and is absolute perfection to me in every way. I can't believe they still had one of these around, given how hard they are to find, and I don't think they knew what they had (quite honestly, neither did I until I bought it and looked it up online after).
I decided to say "screw it" and try a real American Standard side-by-side and still ended up with this absolute gem. It just felt and sounded better to me.
You can get any Strat tone you can imagine from this. Sometimes it's a bit warmer or punchier than you might expect, but you can Tone (control) it down. With the humbucker, you can also get some great lead and even modern tones.

I have a son that works in a music store. Soon after he started they got this strat in and hung it with the high end axes. I'm a sucker for the natural blond finish type guitars. This one in ash with the turtle shell pickguard, rosewood neck, vintage white knobs and pick ups fit my dream of what a strat should look like. I avoided playing it so not to get attached to it but soon the semi-aforadable price and good looks set the hook and it went into layaway. Its playability is better than I expected. The neck and frets make it much easier to play than my 30 year old Westone. This guitar is a gift to my self and I love it. Thank you Fender!
