Kurt Cobain Jaguar®

Model : 0143000
$1,819.99MSRP

One of Fender's most distinctive signature models ever is the Kurt Cobain Jaguar®–meticulously modeled on the battered and highly unusual 1965 Jaguar that Cobain wielded during the heady early-'90s era when Nirvana ruled rock and led a musically stunning and culturally subversive movement.

Fender craftsmen have reproduced Cobain's battle-hardened Left-Handed Jaguar down to the last unusual detail, including its worn finish, dual humbucking pickups and unique electronics and controls (which were already in place when Kurt acquired the guitar in summer 1991).

Unique features include an alder body with Road Worn® aged finish and hardware treatment, bound fingerboard with pearloid dot markers, Stratocaster® headstock shape with 1950s-style "spaghetti" logo, DiMarzio® humbucking DP103 PAF 36th Anniversary neck pickup and DP100 Super Distortion bridge pickup, triple knurled "chrome-dome" knob configuration (volume-volume-tone), three-position toggle switch, black chrome Adjusto-Matic™ bridge and Gotoh® sealed tuners. Available in right- and left-handed versions.

Accessories include a black textured vinyl hard-shell case and an exclusive Fender Kurt Cobain book with photos and commentary by Charles Peterson and an insightful interview with Nirvana guitar tech Earnie Bailey.

I love this guitar. Visually stunning and feels fantastic to play. Such a versatile instrument, lots of options, great tone and would highly recommended to anyone. Obviously this is aimed at Nirvana fans and fender really have pulled something special out of the bag on this one.

Like the title says, if you love the Nirvana sound, go buy this thing. Great looking and sounds even better. I was super excited when I first read about this one, ordered it that day. Price was a bit high for a Mexican guitar, but i have to say that the quality was better then other Mexican builds I've played, mostly I think it's the pickups that make the difference. Setup was off from the factory, that's pretty normal though and easy to fix. Also I was glad to see they put a tune-o-matic instead of the normal jag bridge so you can actually play this guitar pretty hard. As for tone, just listen to any Nirvana album you can pretty much make it sound like that.

The Authentic Nirvana sound

The Fender Kurt Cobain Jaguar is widely seen as a niche guitar - a homage to the late Kurt Cobain targeted at the many guitarists he inspired to pick up a guitar and learn to play. I am one of those guitarists who, in my early teens, did exactly that. Twenty years later Fender have accurately recreated what some may say is the guitar Kurt was most recognised for using (especially in the Nevermind era).

At just over £1000 (GBP) it's certainly not the cheapest guitar you could buy, but in my humble opinion, it's worth saving for. The guitar it's self is a modified '65 Jaguar - It's had the single coils replaced with Dimarzio Humbuckers, it's been wired to incorporate a 3 way toggle switch, an additional volume knob and a 'Adjust-O-Matic bridge.

Due to the two different Humbuckers (Dimarzio super distortion in the bridge and Dimarzio PAF in the neck position) the contrast in tone available is quite large. In the neck position you can achieve a soft, warm, well balanced tone. However this guitar really comes to life when switching to the bridge humbucker. At the flick of a switch you'll be churning out loud, rip saw, sharp and punchy tones. To those of you who are nirvana fans - think 'School' or 'Drain You' from the 'Muddy banks of the wishkah' live album.

The inclusion of the adjust-o-matic brige with ensure there is no string slippage from the saddles - this can be a common problem with the classic floating bridge found on regular Jaguars. Especially for guitarists with an 'aggressive' playing style.

The body is covered in chips, scratches, dings and paint chips which Fender claim to be accurate to Kurts original guitar. It's an aquired taste, but this particular guitar wouldn't look 'right' if it was shiny and new, due to the nature of what it is - a recreation of Kurt Cobains iconic guitar.

Some players may find the jumbo frets to cause intonation problems. I had some trouble with pressing down on the G string too hard caused the notes to go sharp. This was mostly resolved by upping the string guage to 11s (it ships with 10s) and a giving it a good set up. The other issue I had was that the plate on the lower 'horn' (with the toggle switch) had been installed upside down, so I had to unscrew it, rotate it 180 degrees and screw it up nice and tight again.

I'd also like to be clear that this guitar is easily worthy of being used in all forms of music, not just rock /punk/ grunge/ metal ect. As certain YouTube videos will testify. OK, maybe not ALL types, but what's the harm in trying right? From something old comes something new...

All in all, a great guitar. Very versatile, great sounding, fun to play! If you're a Nirvana fan it's a must have. If you're looking for something a little different I would definitely tell you to consider this guitar.

I give it 4/5.
