Great Strat

(4.0)
didger on June 7, 2014
Blues Alternative Rock Classic Rock Folk Classical Reggae/Ska

I got this Strat as an SRV fan and a guy with long fingers who wanted to check out the neck. I really like it overall but there's a few things that don't quite nail it for me that the newer Vintage Hot Rod 60s Strat I recently picked up at the same price does better. So if you're not looking for gold hardware or the SRV on your pickguard, I might suggest you check out the Hot Rod as well before buying the SRV. Maybe you'll agree with me, maybe not.

I love the shape of the SRV neck but have mixed feelings on the 12" radius. I like a little more curve, especially on the lower frets. The actual SRV #1 the model was loosely based on actually had an unintentional compound radius after many refrets. I don't know full details, but it started its life as 7.25" radius, and from what I've read it ended its life with something LIKE a 12" at the high end, but still more curve at the low. So in this way, the newer Hot Rod 60s with its 7.25"-12" compound radius might be more SRV than the SRV model is. Either way, I find it more comfortable and more fun to play than the SRV.

I also have mixed feelings on the Texas Specials. It seems like they're an attempt to simulate the tone SRV got by using heavy strings and cranking his amps, but it doesn't quite cut it for me. Again, after getting the Hot Rod 60s, I found I preferred the more authentic vintage sound of its pickups for SRV style tone.

So I do love my SRV and am happily keeping it as my go to Eb Strat while I keep the Hot Rod in standard tuning. If I had to pick one of the two, however, I'd stick with the Hot Rod.

I have been a player since age eight, now nearing fifty with many years playing off and on. My wife found it fitting to gift to me for our ten year anniversary. I can't say enough about the quality and production of an artist inspired Strat. I played an Ibanez copy Les Paul in my youth and kept it forever. The feel and sound of this instrument drew me out of a long, long quietness to explore and exercise my desire to rip, riff and roar a bit. The Texas special pickups are beefy and the feel of the oval neck and Pau Ferro board are superb (never was a fan of solid maples, maybe just me). The left bridge tremolo I am getting used to. I just LOVE this critter. I say at least check it out. I am impressed and love exploring what it and I can do.

Very nice guitar to play and it's a perfect match to my Fender Twin 1976.
