Having owned numerous bass guitars thru 35 years of playing I have to say I was completely floored when I opened up my new American Special Jazz Bass - the fit, finish, quality and setup was that of a guitar three times the price easily. The neck plays like butter and feels like silk. The tones you could pull out of the greasebucket tone circuit are just amazing from a bright piano like shine to deep low not muddy, flat Motown sound and everything in between. This Beast will cover any style be it Funk, Metal, Blues, Country, R&B it can do it all. The neck is super slim and satin finish just flies. It was set up perfect out of the box and almost perfectly in tune, and it is hard to put down. What I though would become a very good back up instrument to my Kubicki X factor has just become my primary bass guitar and for under $1000 bucks, you can just not go wrong with this American beauty. Getting to play this at my music store live and finally getting it was a great day as this was a 50th Bday present to myself. I couldn't have been happier.
Thank you for such a great bass. Yet again, Fender, you hit it out of the park, another home run. If you are considering a Jazz and want American but don't need the Hardshell case don't hesitate. I did change out pickguard for 22 bucks to a tortoiseshell but that was just a personal choice. It needs no modifications whatsoever.

I have owned my AS J bass for a solid 19 months now and have been playing in church, at friends houses, on the road at venues ranging in size from 10 to 3,000 people. I still haven't had to adjust the setup from day one! The tone is very warm, yet can get real gritty really fast, a very dynamic set of pickups here. I used to run with about 3-4 basses at a time, since thinning the herd, this is only bass I still play 24/7.
One thing I would love to see Fender do with it is build it standard with either Fender's own stockier bridge or a BadAssII. I also added block "inlay" markers for looks.
Overall... buy it. Play it. Love it.

Returning to playing bass after 20 yrs of not playing, previously played a Precision but since age is a factor, the thinner neck line is an easier play than the wide PBass. This bass came right out of the box set up well enough I didn't have to make a single adjustment, it plays fantastic, sounds really good and the price point is great. I would recommend the American Special Series to anyone who wants a well made, great playing bass. Oh, it's made in the USA, a very important factor when considering my purchase. Get you one, you'll LOVE it!!!

I bought my JB at Guitar Center Orlando, FL in February 2013. Excellent place.
I live in Brazil and I am already playing with some friends. Its sound and performance are awesome.
I recommend Fender JB American special for every bass player interested in Jazz and MPB.
