Vintage Killer

(4.0)
brconflict on October 9, 2014 (updated October 9, 2014)
Jazz Alternative Rock Pop Rock Heavy Metal

Fender has done a great job of keeping the faith of purists, meanwhile pushing the envelope a little more each year. Some would say I'm crazy, but I'll put this bass up against those vintage models any day! This bass resonates well, the expectations are all there, and a BONUS...ACTIVE mode! The beautiful bottom end you can get from this on a stage is beyond anything you can grab from the past. Yes, I went there. I've played many sought after vintage basses, and they all sound terrific in their own ways. However, when you pick this one up, you'll be pleasantly surprised at what it does without breaking your bank (or your back).

Balance is incredible, the playability is second to none, and tone for centuries. I can't put it down! Play with a pick in Passive mode through a tube amp and you'll know what it means to play a genuine Fender P-Bass! Go Active and fill the room with beautiful bottom end!

I would like to see a "black-out" option from Fender (all black hardware and pick guard).
I modded mine with new hardware, but it was very tough to get exact replacement parts I needed.

The N3 pickup can be a bit noisy near a computer (at least my copy is), but is otherwise super-silent. The wiring inside leaves something to be desired, not what I'd expect from an American model, but it works just fine, and I'm happy with that.

Finally, and something that was a problem with my older Jazz Active bass. Plugging it in and unplugging this bass is silent. No more loud thump/pop!

Give one a try!! Plug it into a 300-Watt tube amp mated with an 8x10 cab. FEEL what nothing else can compete with!! GOOSE BUMPS!!

A Classic With A Modern Edge

(5.0)

Blues R&B Rap

This is an excellent bass in terms of tone, features and playability. Every passive pickup position is reminiscent of a classic record and the active tones just catapult this into uncharted - yet still classic-sounding - territories. Round Precision and growly Jazz tones, with very satisfying mixes of the two, a cutting but warm passive tone control, and very musical active 3-band EQ. A dream all-rounder, yet with very identifiable vintage character.

I own several basses; Fenders as well as other name brands including boutiques. This bass however, has swiftly become among my all time favorites. Never before have I played a more versatile and solid bass. The Deluxe Precision marries the traditional old school Fender Precision sound with the new age jazz tones. If you're seeking a wide range of tones from that Motown sound to the modern funk, traditional blues, or rock; then look no further. The Deluxe P offers the old school growl, rump shaking bottom, and new age modern funk with clear mids and crisp highs; all in one bass. The noiseless pickups are extraordinarily responsive; whether active or passive. I'd been searching for that one bass that can hold its own no mater the musical style and finally it's here.
Seriously, I own 3 additional Fender jazz basses; one 5 string 24 fret, one traditional 5 string, a Fender Marcus Miller Jazz bass, and one 4 string Fender Select Jazz. I also own other Fender Precision basses (fretless and fretted), a Peavey Cirrus 6 string bass, a Lakland AJ (Active Jazz) bass. I've also played or owned and/or played Pedulla, Alembic, Ken Smith, and Fodera. For my money, I'll stay loyal to Leo; the originator of the first electric bass ; more specifically, the deluxe P. Hopefully Fender will design and release a 24 fret 6 string version!!

This bass is awesome.

Starting however with the negatives: the range of colours is woeful - this really needs to be improved, given what is available from other companies. Also, if I were a hardcore bass soloist / trickster, then I probably wouldn't reach first for this bass.

The good parts: great sound and tone - sounds so nice (people keep commenting), THUMPING low end - I mean THUMPING, easy to play - smooth.

If you want to play a bass in the traditional rock / punk / blues sense, then you won't beat this bass.

A tasty and great sounding hybrid Fender bass

Semi-Professional Blues Jazz Classic Rock Pop Rock Country

Due to a need to downsize my collection and following a few gigs with a friend's 2012 American Deluxe,P-Bass, I recently sold my US Standard P and J basses to acquire a black maple board '13 US Deluxe. Many reviewers of this bass have attested to its hybrid nature. They are quite correct. The American Deluxe makes a very good stab indeed at both American Standard P and J basses in passive mode and has the added bonus of switchable active circuitry to give a much wider palette of tones. It is at home with any musical genre you can think but obviously your amp settings are equally critical here. The Deluxe also retains a lot of the traditional and uncluttered look of Fender basses and is of very light weight despite high-quality electronics and hardware. It has a neck feel to die for. Overall build quality is top-class. The basses I sold to acquire this one are industry standards with a decades-long and rich musical heritage. The Deluxe does it better, however and is one of a very few successful hybrid instruments that I'm aware of. Because both Precision and Jazz Bass players will appreciate what is on offer here, the American Deluxe Precision Bass represents a carefully thought-out evolution and convergence of..... two great instruments! Very highly recommended!

Monster of Rock

(5.0)
ToniMcGuire on September 27, 2013 (updated September 27, 2013)
Professional Blues Funk Rock Classic Rock Pop Rock

After 30 years of playing bass I have played a lot of different basses. My only Fender was a 1980 Precision Special. I prefer to play active basses
because that gives me more control of my bass sound that is coming out of the PA. All the basses I played were really nice sounding
instruments but after I while I was not really satisfied. Something was missing. So when Fender brought out the new american deluxe
instruments my dealer told me that I should try it out. I needed 3 years before testing the new Precision Bass. It kicked my ass from the
first moment I held this beauty in my hands. There was the little thing that I was missing in the sound of my other basses. I have this bass in
sunburst and it looks beautiful. The preamp is really good and you can get lots of different sounds. The jazz bass pickup gives this
bass the punch and clarity that I love. I think that the P\J setup is the best combination you can put on a bass guitar. The really good thing is that this bass never looses his precision character. It just sounds a bit better. The active passive switch is a really good feature and if you switch it to passive mode, blend to the preci pu you have got the passive precision in a very high quality. I was so hypnotized by this bass that I also bought an american deluxe Jazz. So check it out. You can't get more bass for your money. The american deluxe series beats the rest on the marked.
Thank you Fender that you built those two basses for me ;-)

This bass is amazing, but when you get it (like most Fender instruments) you're going to need to tune it up. Like shave the nut down so the strings rest in the right spot and put paper under the neck bolt so it doesn't buzz in the high register, besides all that, this thing is the master. And I have been playing for years and own many Fender basses. It's the bombdiggity

All Rounder Bass

NDF on April 19, 2013
Amateur Alternative Rock Classic Rock Pop Rock

I own the 98/99 American deluxe p-bass. This bass delivers the best range of tones you will ever need: you can play the vintage precision sound or otherwise use the classic jazz bass tone in a modern style with the active circuitry. Though my model has a modern hum-bucker instead of the jazz pickup, with this bass you have the option to switch between an active or passive bass, which is a mayor upgrade. Anyway, with the versatility, elegant style, 3 EQ band and everything else that is given with this bass, you will finally see yourself using the precision pickup more often than you imagine, because that sound is non replaceable... in the end what its a p-bass (that can give you the jazz and modern bass sound if you wish or need so).

Last Bass I'll Ever Need

Semi-Professional Blues R&B Alternative Rock Classic Rock Country

This is a fine instrument. Full stop. Playability, weight, balance, fit, feel, finish, and build quality are all superb. The pickups are hot, even without the active circuitry. The ability to get "true bypass" of the active circuitry was one of the things that initially attracted me to this model and it works great! It's like having two separate basses available, all at the flip of a switch. I have a '74 fretless P-bass, a '78 Gibson RD Artist, and a 2012 Jaguar. Tonally, this American Deluxe is like having them all combined into one extremely playable (and great-looking) package. Like the title of the review says, I'm pretty sure this is the last bass that I will ever need.

The best of both worlds

(5.0)
Longtooth on February 18, 2013
Professional Classic Rock

Is this a PBass or a JBass? Well, it's actually BOTH, and everything in between! If you're looking for that classic Precision Bass growl, you have the split single-coil P pickup. If you want that iconic Jazz Bass sound, there's the N3 Noiseless J pickup. If you want the best of both worlds, leave the pot in the mid position, or, just a tweak either way will get you a custom blend of the two best sounding bass guitars known to man! This bass played great right off the wall with the factory setup. Very impressive. The active/passive mini-toggle switch is a handy addition in case the two 9 volt batteries start losing their juice. Fit and finish is excellent, typical of the American Deluxe series. I bought the black version with the maple neck almost a year ago, and I'm very pleased with it. I never thought I could love another bass as much as my 5 year old American Deluxe Jazz Bass V, but this PBass is coming very close. My one and only complaint, (and this goes for the JBass as well) is that when I went to replace strings on both basses, I found that a screw had fallen out of one of the tuners. Fender and Hipshot quickly sent me new ones, and a drop of Locktite will ensure that they stay put. If you can't decide between the P and J basses, this is the guitar for you!
