I was going into the music store to buy strings. I saw this bass and went straight to it. I have a Classic Player Jazzmaster I also gig with. When I picked it up, I knew I was going to buy it. The only time i bought and instrument without plugging it into an amp and playing. I'm nin my mid 40s and play in a working band, I've used Fender Gear for over 30 years. The brigde and tuners were the same as on several other Fender basses I own, all I did was check to see if the screws were tight. The neck was very close to what I set on relief. Action was high but I set guitars and basses up for fellow musicians. The look of this bass blew me away. This was the very first one of these the music store had, I had not seen one yet. There was no price tag on it, The store sold it to me for the price of the cheaper jaguar bass, when I noticed this a couple weeks later i told the store they said don't worry about it, that I bought enough stuff from them. When i got home i plugged it in and adjusted the pickups. They are actually pretty hot. The stack knobs remind me of my Danelectro Basses, the notched tone knobs took a little getting used to, but i am not complaining at all. The P pickup has a nice growl to it, The Jazz pickup is nice and twangy. If I had designed this bass I would have reversed the pickup layout. This bass has a better tone than my USA 1990 J-P 90 Bass.
I am leaving in an hour or so to play a show on the oregon coast. I've got it loaded already. If you hear a band and see a Blue Buick Hearse and see one of these basses on stage It's Me.
I own a ton of Fender Gear. This bass is very nice, Does not feel, look, or sound like a budget instrument. Just holding it and the unplugged sound of this bass sold me, No Regrets :)

I play the bass guitar for fun. I love the instrument. In 1976 my father helped me buy a Fender Precision Bass and Bassman 10 amplifier. I still have the bass and I love, it but I was itching for a new instrument (I just got a bug for a new one). I tried about a zillion basses at various prices and by various manufacturers, but when I played the Vintage Modified Jaguar Bass I was in love all over again and I knew immediately that It was the ONE.
It has all the tones I was searching for, the look, the feel, and the price... The price blew me away. I couldn't believe I could get a bass this hot for under $500.
Anyway, I only stopped playing it to write this review. Just wanted to let the people at Fender know that I appreciate the effort you all put into making such a quality product at an affordable price. I suspect in another 40 years I'll get a hankering to buy another Fender bass, but until then I'm having a blast playing my new VM Jag.
Thanks,
Gregg

If you care about having a quality instrument that looks, feels and sounds high quality, and do not need the Fender logo on the headstock, this is a tremendous choice.

I was given this bass by a friend. I have heard that the quality varies from bass to bass in the Squier line, but the one I had was brilliant. The two tone knobs and two volume knobs gave this bass a wide range of tonal possibilities. I was playing it through a Fender Rumble 15v2 and could not believe the low end growl it could produce. I was also able to dial in some warmer bass tones.
The fit and finish was spot on and I had no complaints about this product other than I prefer short scale basses (I play mostly guitar and feel stretched when I switch). I traded it to a friend who plays guitar in a local band but needs a bass periodically. He loves the look and sound and enjoys telling everyone how little this bass goes for.
If the other VM Jaguar Basses are as good as mine was, then it maybe the greatest value bass on the market.
