You're not going to do better than this, unless you go for an American Fender, my friend. I have this very model, not the previous one with the satin finished neck and the Duncan Designed pickups that many had raved about. This newer version is even better. Even though the neck is high gloss, it's not sticky as you might think, such as it is on the Classic Vibe 60s Jazz bass. The pickups are great, plenty of low end, versatile, just like a Jazz should be.

I've got Fender Custom Light Flatwounds (9050CL) (0.045 to 0.105 gauge, which is perfect, no nut filing) installed on this thing, and you get plenty of thump and deep low end with this bass (once the strings are 'broken in'), whilst still retaining lots of definition in the top end and vintage slightly dark flatwound bark.

It's at the beginning of the run for these babies, so chances are good that you can get a great looking 2-piece body. The grain on mine is so close, you only see the seam on the back and below the neck joint. For those wondering if this newer version stacks up to the original VM Jazz bass - yes it does.

One criticism, and I hope it's one that Squier will address - the tone pot doesn't work very well. Not sure if it's the capacitor or the pot, but the tone works full up, then when you turn it down by 1/10 a turn, it cuts off completely. Very minor flaw, and there are inexpensive remedies, and if you're a home recording musician like me, it's really not a deal breaker.

Very easy to play, once set up properly, frets feel great (well dressed) very comfortable, just like any decent Jazz bass should be. Tuners are great, even with flats they stay rock solid in tune, and with a great setup, intonation can be near perfect.

This is a ridiculously great instrument for the price. If you're a lefty, this is it. Or the sunburst with tortie shell pickguard and rosewood fingerboard. Can't go wrong with this!!!

Amateur Heavy Metal

Wow, what a machine this is. I bought this bass, about 3 years ago. For awhile I played it, then put it away cause I had other things going on in my life. I got a call to audition for the band I'm in now, a thrash/NWOBHM style band. So since this bass was my only bass I owned, I dug it out, and haven't played any other bass since. You can dial in any kind of tone you want for this bass. From slap to funk reggae, metal, rock, and obviously jazz. This Squier J bass is the cats meow as it were. Although I really want a P-bass to add to my arsenal, unfortunately Squier doesn't make a P-bass in left, i'll save and get a Fender one. If you truly want a bass that you can gig with either beginner or pro, this is the bass. Thank you Squier for making these in a left handed version!!!!!!!
