I just gigged with this head for the first time and was blown away. The Contour switch pretty much instantly gave me a powerful, modern metal, on-the-verge-of-breakup tone with fantastic low-end, but without any loss of definition. I was able to leave the parametric EQ controls set at 12 o'clock, except for dialing back the treble to 11:00 to account for extra-bright strings and aluminum speaker cones. The overdrive tone is very Ace of Spades-ish, again with tons of definition. I only had to turn the master volume up halfway to be heard clearly onstage, and my band's stage volume is pretty darned high. The head is lightweight, but still feels super sturdy. The aux input and headphone out make practicing with "my sound" a total breeze. The DI out, pretty much expected on any good combo/head these days, worked great and was appreciated by the house sound guy. All that having been said, the Vintage button will indeed give a great old-school growly tone as well. I didn't mess with the Bright switch all that much, since my tone is plenty bright without any EQ. The included gig bag is an extremely nice touch too! I absolutely cannot imagine more bang for the buck than what this little beast delivers. Some background: My main bass is a Geddy Lee with Ernie Ball Cobalt Power Slinky strings, tuned down to drop-Bb. No effects, just straight into the head and into a 4X10 cab.
