I picked up a FSR American Special Strat at my local Long and McQuade (Canada), was customer return. Its a 2013. A flawless guitar in White with Tortoise guard and ROSEWOOD fingerboard with SSS pickups. Im normally a maple guy and most of the strats and teles Ive ever had, and there have been several, have all but two been maple, but I like this guitar very much. Plays and sounds great!

Bought the American Spcl after playing a number of models. My choice was primarily based on how great the modern C neck felt. I loved the comfort as well, the feel of the jumbo frets. Of course I like the standard features, 5-way switch and sound of the Texas Spcl PUPs. Though I would have liked a three color sunburst, the two color sunburst is OK.

Back in the 70's I had a PRE-CBS Fender Strat. I had it for several years till I finally sold it since I wasn't playing it much and I was on my way for a four year tour in the Navy. Since then I've bought various guitars, American Tele, two Squier Strats, a Gibson Les Paul, and other guitars. I was looking for a new Strat and considered a MIM that was nice in all aspects, but when I tried out the American Special Strat, I was sold immediately. The feel of the neck and the sound was amazing! I definitely loved the fact that I could tone up or down the bridge pickup. The sound when I raised the tone on the bridge pickup gave me great sustain and sharp response. When I lowered it, the sound was just as amazing, it didn't lose the crisp and clear response, just adjusted the the bass sound efficiently. The jumbo frets are nice specially for bending the strings and fine for shredding. I bought the CAR and its gorgeous! A finely crafted guitar that sounds and looks fantastic. Prior to this purchase the Les Paul was my go-to guitar and favorite, well its been sitting in its case since I brought home the Strat. This AMS is my favorite guitar in my collection and its not a mystery why. Thanks Fender for this affordable, incredible beauty!

This guitar is absolutely amazing! The look with the fat headstock reminds me the late 60s king of Strat and that's not just the look, the sound is there too. The quality of this guitar is really underestimated with that price. I've got the Red one and the picture is not as good as the real product.
This guitar is often compare to the American Standard but it as nothing to do with it. The Texas Pickup (same as SRV signature strat) add a lot of warmth compare to the modern sound of the Standard.
The modern C shape with jumbo frets make its really easy to bend notes. The neck is fast and smooth.
I would love to have the fly case but the bag is good enough and will do the work!

After years of wanting a Stratocaster and seeing all of my blues and rock heroes play them, I was finally able to purchase myself one of these as a highschool graduation gift. I've had my two-tone for nearly 4 years now, and I've been satisfied from the start. I had owned many cheaper Stratocasters before, a few Squiers, but when I played this one at my local music store I could tell the difference. I personally wanted a guitar with a more bluesy feel, and I've found that the American Special delivers on that. I recently checked with the same shop I bought mine from, and they have the same model in an Olympic White finish that has been sitting on their shelves since I purchased mine, and I will more than likely be back to buy that one as a project or side guitar. For the price, this is a fantastic deal for anyone looking to purchase an American-made Strat, there is nothing not to love here!
I love this. I initially wanted to purchase a deluxe players stratocaster (the Mexican one) and went into one of my local shops to buy one. I received horrible service and left feeling underwhelmed. So I went home and contacted Kenny's Music and they explained I could buy this for the same price. I tried this compared to a Mexican and the sound is unmistakable. In terms of sound it's amazing although doesn't have a classic strat sound a result of the Texas specials. I personally love them. The finish and feel are amazing and I cannot fault it. This Is my my first strat as I used to hate them but my mind has changed. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a premium quality instrument without paying a premium price. And the green makes a nice change from the lack of variety in the American standard range. Please give this a try if the opportunity presents itself!

I changed the machines to locking and swapped out the pickups and electronics with a Fralins setup with a blender pot. She is now a perfect looking, playing and kick ass Strat!!! You should make a Deluxe in this color with a maple neck....You would sell a ton!!!!

I had the great pleasure of working for Fender for the past 5 years, and as you can imagine, it was such a cool experience. As a parting gift, Fender was kind enough to give me this beautiful Strat!
I have American Vintage Reissues, American Deluxes, American Standards, etc. but I was no stranger to the American Special line-up; my most recent favorite axe has been an American Special Tele.
Regarding this baby, I love the Texas Special PuPs, the feel of the maple neck, and the beautiful contour of the body. It just fits right! And the color...!!! In Paris Hilton's words, "that's hot."
Even after having worked there, I still don't understand how Fender is able to sell these USA-made guitars at such a great price. Well worth every dollar.

I've always wanted a Fender Stratocaster ever since I was 13 years old. I had joined a custom guitar factory and made my own electric guitar. The one I made looked like a Fender Stratocaster but didn't come as close the tone of a genuine one. Now, finally I have one made in the USA not to mention an American Special. Thank you Fender for making such a classic edition. LOVE IT!

I have been playing guitar for a little over 25 years. I've owned many guitars of different brands, with Fender being my favorite, and more specifically, the Telecaster. On the day that I went to my music store to purchase a new guitar it was my full intention to buy another Tele. After some time in the store I had one picked out and was just kinda wondering around, cause, well, it's a guitar store and it's like friggin' Disneyland. Anyway, so I'm standing there just kinda looking' at stuff and this Strat caught my eye. There was just something about the way it looked, I don't know, it was just beautiful. So I put the Tele down and walked over and picked up the Strat. From the second I cradled it into the playing position I knew I had found something special, something very "right." I'm not going to rattle off tech specs, it's a very well made guitar in EVERY single facet. What I do want to say however, is that I have played hundreds of guitars, owned about 20 of them over the years, and I can honestly say, without hesitation or thought to the contrary, this is the most PERFECT guitar I have ever played, EVER! I walked up to the counter opened my wallet and said "here, just take my money!" Thank you Fender, thank you for this gift you have made for me, she will always have a happy, and loving home, forever.

I've had this guitar for over a year now, I've replaced the pickguard and knobs and pickup covers and whatnot to black (on a two tone sunburst) and it's just absolutely beautiful. My main genres that I play are Hard Rock/Heavy Metal, and this beast has absolutely NO problem doing those. I use a Marshall that mainly uses a type of natural distortion, and this thing can get HEAVY. In the bridge pickup, I can play any type of high gain tone that i wish to play. It has great bite, not too much treble, and responds well to your playing (pick attack, volume knob adjustments, etc). The middle pickup gets a SWEET SRV type of tone (it's the pickups in his sig. model), and the neck pickup has an absolutely beautiful tone, that, depending on your eq, can go from a RHCP tone to a Gibson type tone (same goes for bridge pup as well). I have a recording (all done with this guitar) up at www.soundcloud.com/trickylizard and you can hear how well this thing can handle distorion! My ONLY complaint about the guitar is just a personal preference, which is i wish it had a much thicker neck. I will probably end up switching the neck out for something with a thicker profile (hint hint Fender). All together, this thing is amazing, and once I've made my final modification, it will be the PERFECT guitar.

I just received my American Special Stratocaster. Wow! I have an American Standard 50th Anniversary Telecaster but this Strat is even more impressive. The sound is classic Stratocaster. I write and perform Country, Southern Rock and Rock. This axe has a magnificant pallet of sound. It is utterly playable. I especially love the big chunky frets and the satin neck back. The classic tremolo works flawlessly and the guitar maintains its tune perfectly. I have an SG Standard and a Les Paul Studio. However, for a wide variety of Rock and Country, the Stratocaster is still king.

I have owned a number of strats over the years from Squier Classic Vibes to American Standard FSRs and I have to say that the American Special I purchased is one of the best. Great set up right out of the box. I have always tried to make sure I played the guitar before buying but with the great return policy offered by the online retailer, I thought I'd give an on-line store a try since my local store did not have this model in stock. I was not disappointed.

This is my fifth Fender instrument, including basses. This is the very best one. The only thing I feel a little bit confused about is the position of the four and two combining pickups. I feel significantly more drop of trebles than e.g. on my Baja Telecaster. How are the pickups wired? I did not open the pickguard yet. Is this the special behaving of Texas Specials?

This was my first guitar. I bought it about three years ago, and I would trade almost any guitar in for this one. The playability is great, and I feel like I improved my skills way faster than with my older guitar. I could spend hours everyday playing and listening, even unplugged. The pick-ups are good, but not my all-time favorite so I may change them in the future. Also, adding a new nut and locking tuners gave my guitar a newer, even better feel. Along with a locked tremolo, it stays in tune for a very long time while having a tiny little bit more sustain. I really recommend checking this Strat out. It never failed me.

Having owned many Stratocasters over the last 30 years, I feel that the American Special is the best value for money I've ever owned. I prefer the vintage tremolo unit and modern neck radius of the Special. The jumbo frets make for effortless string bending and fast runs. I love the Surf Green option and I have this colour again (I sold my American Vintage in this colour because of the frets and neck radius) and the Greasebucket circuit is very helpful in shaping tones. Fender also wired the tone control to the bridge pickup (a feature I loved on my Am. Deluxe, but I wasn't a fan of the pickups). Overall, this combination of features and the colour suit me perfectly. If I have a gripe, it is that I would have preferred the 50's headstock to the 70's, but that is only a minor quibble.

This guitar is just amazing! I bought one in September, 2012, and being my first serious investment in such an instrument it gets a 5 out of 5 from me. I've always wanted to own an American Strat and when I finally got my hands on this one I wasn't disappointed. I've since let pure Metal heads (I'm mainly a Blues player) who normally prefer "Warlock's" or Metal shaped guitars, play my strat and they've been so impressed by it's easy playability and tone that I've now converted them into Stratocaster lovers!!!
I highly recommend this guitar....especially when it's also played through a Fender amp as well. I went and boughht a new Mustang I amplifier (20 watts) and with the ableton software and USB connectivity i can get some amazing sounds....the variables are endless! I accompany this set up with a Vox wah wah pedal and presto - I can imitate Stevie Ray Vaughan's and Jimi's tones easily!
Even played totally clean through the Fender Mustang amp the tone is just perfect for Blues or Jazz sounds. I reckon this has a lot to do with the Texas Special pick-ups - they really put out a great tone....helped along with the 'greasebucket " circuitry...total ear candy!

After I sold my Gibson Les Paul while in College back in the late '80s, I thought I'd never own a world class guitar ever again. Well my Stratocaster Special is just that. Great tones, a neck that plays smooth like soft butter, and affordable. Great example of American craftsmanship. It is worth every penny I paid. To the people at the factory, I say, great job building my Special !!! :)

I was initially after a USA Standard Strat, but I thought I would look at the USA Special as it seemed like a very good deal. So where have the corners been cut to keep the price down ? Wood-wise, they’re pretty much the same. Fender UK confirmed that all the USA Standards and Specials use 2 or 3 piece alder bodies which was a good start – so they’re no longer making bodies out of multiple blocks with a veneer on the top and bottom like they did in the 90s. OK for a base model but for me, a big no-no for a USA model ! To me, the neck woods looked identical. The Special has the 70s style headstock an logo which you either love or hate. Personally, I love it. I grew up in the 70s ! The quality of finish on the bodies looked the same to me – both very deep and shiny and faultless. The neck finish is slightly different – the Special has a matt finish back and front whereas the Standard has a gloss finish on the front of the headstock and a gloss finish on the maple boards. One area where for me, the Special definitely has the advantage is that it doesn’t the aged plastic parts which I hate but hey, that’s just my opinion …. Hardware-wise, the Standard has the latest version of its 2-point tremolo/bridge unit whereas the Special has the classic 6 point unit. Both seemed very smooth and returned to pitch which was fine for me – but I’m not a heavy user of the tremolo arm. The Standard has more adjustability on the neck with the micro-tilt and the bi-flux truss rod, but for me the action was fine on both models with very little fret buzz. What seems to be the deal clincher for lots of people are the jumbo frets, Texas Special pickups and the grease bucket electrics. This is obviously a matter of personal taste and the only way to decide is to try one for yourself. I loved the tone of the Texas Special pickups which seemed to have more “oomph” than the standard. The Jumbo frets were no problem as I was brought up on them ! My very first “proper” guitar which was the only guitar I had for over 10 years was a 70s Norlin Gibson SG whose frets were rail tracks compared to the Special … so I felt very much at home ! Finally, you don’t get the case with the Special. The gig bag is OK but not that well padded. I would definitely recommend a proper case if you’re gigging. In the end I went for the Special in Surf Green and having now owned it for a couple of months I don’t regret it for a minute. A definite keeper - and I would recommend this guitar to anyone !

Just bought a Surf Green at the leading music store here in Serbia. Great looks and feel, however there is a slight fret buzz in various positions. I am wondering whether anyone had the same experience. I would very much appreciate some advice before I arrange a setup.

At one time or other had up to 25 guitars including 7 different Fender's, 1962 Ri, American Standard , Strat + MIJ 1983 strat, an Amer. Vintage Telecaster, and now this special. The special is the easiest to play and I like the tone, a little buzz but a little adjustment was all it needed, got it in CAR because most of the others were burst, really like the color, a keeper.

Decent American made instrument at a decent price point with a new colour. This guitar plays smooth, fit and finish are decent, so is the fretwork. I'd personally like to see more colour choices like daphne blue and celadon green on all American made instruments like the tele and Pbass. Overall, great product for the price. As with any guitar, try before you buy, there's always a rotten apple in the bunch.

This guitar is an amazing machine for what I play. It is great even though I have a few preferences that don't quite align with this guitar I don't really care when I'm playing it. I personally wish the low action was a little lower, that's something I can adjust myself. Overall it is a very versatile machine that can let you shred, play a ballad, or bang out a tune with a nice swing. Plus, the tone knobs make noticeable differences. Even the tuning machines are great. If you have a wide range of musical interests (to play) then I can't think of a better guitar.
I had a friend come with me to the store to buy a Strat. We tried out several and the tones out of this one were what I was looking for. This was the most affordable american made Strat I could find new. After buying it and playing around with it at home for a little bit I took a close look at it and was amazed at all of the little things I found wrong with it. The neck bolts were loose and the neck was tilted so that was the first thing I fixed, easy. Then the intonation needed a slight tweek as did the height of the strings due to fret buzz but this is personal choice. The nut needs a little adjustment as some of the strings click when tuning so I think there is a little drag going on there. The shielding paint was poorly done inside and was nearly absent under the grounding lug. The pickup selector switch pops but seems to be getting better. I may change this out since that is really unacceptable. The jack nut came loose. The bridge needed tweeking as well to get it to work properly when using the whammy bar. I guess you get what you pay for even if it's made in the good old USA. I expected more from an american crafted guitar and I guess that's what I am most disappointed about. Fortunately I can handle most of the work needed to bring this great deal up to par. The candy apple red finish looks great and I love the neck with it's eased edges. It's a great sounding and comfortable guitar to play and stays in tune well even when using the whammy bar once everything is fine tuned. I love this instrument and play it as often as I can. I would have given 5 stars if it hadn't needed a switch and so much fixing up, still a good value.

I'm mostly a Tele player, but I brought this strat after selling my 50s reissue Jap strat and missed having a strat in my collection. Tried a number of strats in a music store and spent several hours playing Us Standard, FSR US Standard and some Mexican models. I wouldn't say the guitar was any better built than the Mex equivalents at a similar price, but the difference in electronics and the Texas Special pickups were what sold me the guitar. The tone range from the specials is great allowing the usual classic strat styles both clean and driven.
The downside for me was that the neck and jumbo frets took some getting used to and almost put me off buying the guitar. We each have different preferences on these and personally I like a chunky neck, like on my Baja Tele.
The guitar is a keeper for me though now I've got used to it. Value for money is exceptional. I preferred it to the US standard, even though its a cheaper guitar and thought the Texas specials gave it a better sound. US built for that money? A definite bargain

I'd always wanted a Strat in a sunburst finish, and when I finally got the opportunity to obtain one from my hometown Fender dealer, it turned out to be just as good as I hoped it would be. Admittedly, there was initially quite a lot of fret buzz on two or three of the strings, but a little fettling of the nut by the in-house luthier soon cured that. The neck and fingerboard are really comfortable - though I prefer the medium frets of my (American Standard) Tele -, the action easy and the intonation is accurate all the way up the neck. The testimony to the quality of the sound was the luthier's admission, when I came to pick it up, that he hadn't put it down all day! The Texas Special pickups produce a such sweet, sweet sound, and, of course, yield up that iconic Strat "quack". I still think my Tele is my #1, but just as my luthier discovered, days can go by without me playing anything else.

I wanted a great quality American made guitar without emptying my bank account and the Special was the perfect choice. It really is a fantastic instrument and although I no longer gig these days, I spend hours and hours every week just enjoying playing it and listening to those fantastic Strat tones. I choose the Candy Apple Red finish and it is just absolutely gorgeous. I read somewhere that is was Leo's favourite custom colour and I can see why.

Picked this up at the local family owned guitar store. I had originally put an acoustic in layaway but just couldn't get away from the Strat tone! I asked the owner if he would let me trade the acoustic for the Strat. He said sure and I'm the proud owner of an American made Strat with Texas Special PUPS! I love the tone and playability of this Strat. I would recommend this model (and do) to anyone wanting an American made Strat on a budget. I got the Candy Apple Red one, the finish is supreme, the neck is fast and it has jumbo frets! You can't go wrong with one of these.

This GUITAR was my third Fender, the first one I owned, I was too young to realize the special gift I had. The second one came with the HSS humbucker, sounds great, especiallly for hard rock and overdrive /distortion music, but there`s nothing like the first love and now i return to the original 3 single coils, the only one that can get that "quack" sound, so bright and crystal type. I used to play several guitars, like Gibson, Ibanez and other minor brands, but nothing compares to an American Stratocaster. Not only the beautiful concept design (the ergonomy), but also the way this guitar merges with our hands. I used to say to my friends that playing this guitar is like hearing a little orchestra, it sounds so harmonically that even on a single note you can do magic with your vibrato finger style or palm muting (hello Hank Marvin).

I was thinking of customizing my standard strats to the specs I wanted and then Fender surprised me with this guitar:
It has everyting I wanted! large 70's headstockl, 22 jumbo frets, C shaped maple neck, 9.5" radius, texas specials and last but not least.... two-tone sunburst. the pickups sound fat and rich but still retain all the chime that a single coil shoud have.
it is super comfortable and yields itself to effortless playing. Vey happy with this one. If I could add one thing, it would be noiseless pickups but some that still sound like the texas speciasl but without the hum. Thanks Fender for an awesome yet affordable American Strat.

Bought this guitar on a whim as I have been a Gibson / Epiphone / Martin player for about 50 years. Walked into a Fender Dealer's shop to buy a cable and walked out with a Fender Guitar. Played a few notes and a couple of chords and took it directly to a local "tuning" shop to have the playability tweaked just a little. Once J Gravity Strings spent a few minutes with a wrench and a small file... Voila!
The guitar is amazing to play and the tone and pickup combinations a joy. Tuned it to down a half step and the blues are a breeze. HAve barely touched my Les Paul since.
Affordable, very playable and produces sounds only a Strat can make. One of my "best buys" and my go to axe for blues.

The American Specials are great guitars, especially if you want a little more crown to your fret than the American Standard models. I love the jumbo frets and the fret work is superb with the nice fret dressing on the ends of the frets. The quality is great. If you are looking for key differences between these and the American Standards, it's this: these (special) have the vintage style tremolo, not the two point. If you use your trem a lot, can deal with tuning a floating trem and want the better (when using the trem a lot) tuning stability, then the two point is more your speed. If you use the trem sparingly and do not want your guitar to go crazy out of tune when you break a string, then the vintage trem style is for you. The next main difference, as mentioned earlier is that these necks have jumbo frets.
The neck is perfect with the nice hand rolled edges and awesome fret work. The rest is the high quality strat body and electronics you would expect from an American Fender. Now, buy one and go make history. :)
Great job on another great guitar Fender!

I own a Fender two tone American Special Strat and love it. The American Special series is very affordable for most guitarists. My two tone has a maple neck and doing a bend or verbroto is easy. I think the neck is fast and lots of fun to play. The pickups are Texas specials and have the best clean tone and that classic Fender sound. Adding a little tube overdrive for some affect is also great. I wish I could give this guitar a ten star rating. I highly recommend it for any guitar players. I plan to add another Strat or Tele sometime in the future to my collection that's how please I am.
