Squier beats Fender

Seriously this is a Squier. Honestly. It's not a Fender signature guitar though you'd be forgiven for thinking it was. I agree with one of the previous reviews, when this is discontinued people will kick themselves for not picking them up. It's just a beautiful instrument and better than many of it's more expensive cousins. Seriously other than the lack of a locking mechanism on the trem it's easily on a par with models costing 6 times its cost.

The guitar has so much vibe, and despite it being one of the cheaper models I own, it's played far more than some pricier models. It's just my go-to guitar. The trem is hands down the best Jazzmaster I've ever used, It's lower and more subtle but able to be insane when needed. It is more stable with the tune-o-matic and intonation is better but it still warbles when needed. The pickups - they don't sound like P-90s or vintage JazzMaster pickups - they are almost superclean humbuckers in tone. Other than a mild hum when played near an amp, I'd be convinced they were humbuckers. The tone is halfway between dark and gritty and glossy and thick.

The 'aged' look of the colour and controls works very well, not into relic territory but like a closet special. The neck is gorgeous, the action higher than some, but perfect for this style. Even if J Mascis isn't someone you care to emulate, it's just the best value JazzMaster out there. The gold pickguard seems to bother some people but I think it's gorgeous and don't understand anyone who thinks anodized brushed metal isn't classy!

Seriously, if you want an American quality instrument at far east prices, buy this. It's a fine, fine instrument.

A Fender For Those Who Dont Like Fenders ?

(5.0)
Norris Vulcan on September 15, 2013
Amateur Alternative Rock Punk

This is the Fender for those who aren't fans of Strats or Teles, like me. Plays really well, with a great neck and big frets. Stays in tune - this is the best tremolo I've used yet - and the action can be nice and low if you like.
I was surprised how loud and rocking these pickups are, they sound great, don't buzz and hold their own with humbucker guitars, no problem. I find it's range of tones covers all bases really, through an AC30 it sparkles, sustains and gets as filthy as you like. Its resonant and has a complex, airy tone helped by the tremolo spring and longer scale.
It's not a light guitar but its very comfortable, and I guess you either love or hate the look of it. Finish and construction are excellent - easily competes with Fender, in my opinion.
I tried this in the shop without intending to buy, just see what the Jazzmaster was like. I was interested in trying a P90 equipped guitar with 25'' scale, something a little bit different. Five minutes was enough to convince me, especially at the price - £325 in UK - can't go wrong! Its my favourite guitar of the 9 I own.
Niggles? The only thing I can think of is the lack of a tremolo lock button, which would be handy for alternate tunings.
Do yourself a favour and check one out, it may convert you to Fender...

10 years down the road, I believe people will be kicking themselves for not buying this guitar. I absolutely love it, I'm 57 and discovering the Jazzmaster has re-ignited my love of music. The fit, finish and build quality are first rate and the versatility of tone is amazing. Due yourself a favor, stop looking at the name on the headstock and play one of these.

Pleasantly surprised at the quality of a Squier

As a lifelong Fender guy, I always kind of looked down on Squiers as beginner guitars. But the quality, sound, fit and finish of this guitar blew me away. The neck and fretwork are fantastic. The sound is great. It's solid as a rock.
My only complaint is that the pickup selector switch seems to be defective. I'm replacing that and the pickguard, as I just don't like the look of the gold anodized one. Other than that, it's one of my favorite (of 17) guitars now.
