Guitarist Dave Murray of seminal U.K. metal heroes Iron Maiden has been banging his head with Fender since the mid-'70s. Murray recently collaborated with Fender on a signature Stratocaster® guitar based on his '57 model, previously owned by late great Free guitarist Paul Kossoff. The Dave Murray Stratocaster boasts a supercharged HSH configuration, DiMarzio® PAF® 36th Anniversary DP103 neck pickup, DiMarzio® Super Distortion® DP100 bridge pickup and a Fender vintage-style middle pickup. Other features include a lacquer finish and a flatter soft "V"-shaped neck with satin back. Vintage tweed hard-shell case included.

It's probably fair comment to say that this guitar is going to appeal to Maiden fans first and foremost. However I think that build and features mean that it has a lot to offer rock and metal players in general.
What I particularly like is that this strat kind of reflects what a lot of us were doing in the eighties - hot rodding strats to turn them into screaming metal monsters. The DM Strat is basically a '57 re-issue that has been modified to do metal - pickups are the obvious change, but the satin back to the neck and subtle profile change all add speed an playability.
Tonally the DP100 does what you think it should - it's still one of my personal favourites. The DP103 in the neck is quite a contrast - it's thick and fat and gives that classic Murray solo tone. The middle single could should not be overlooked (although I believe that on Dave's original the middle p/up is not connected) it gives a great clean sound - very handy for the quiet bits!
Overall a great guitar - I wonder if the addition of a 5 way switch may have brought a bit more to the party - but that's an easy mod to do if you fancy expanding the switching options.
Build quality is excellent - finish is great solid, case is a nice added touch

I actually won this guitar in an Iron Maiden contest. While I've been a bass player for 30 years, I just started learning to play guitar a few years ago. There is nothing about this guitar that doesn't WOW me. I push this through an OCD pedal and the sound is just crazy. The build on this guitar is tight. As soon as you pick it up, you can feel that you have a quality built instrument in your hands. The signature part makes it even cooler! The best way I can describe how much I like this guitar would be to say even if I hadn't won it and paid full retail for it, I would love it just as much.
